An IVF success rate only becomes meaningful when you know what outcome was measured, which patients were counted, where the treatment journey started, and whether the result resembles your own age, diagnosis and treatment plan. This guide turns the statistics back into a practical patient decision.
An IVF success rate is a ratio. The numerator is an outcome—perhaps a positive pregnancy test, clinical pregnancy, ongoing pregnancy or live birth. The denominator is the group against which that outcome is measured—perhaps cycles started, egg retrievals, embryo transfers or individual patients.
That distinction matters. A clinic may report a strong pregnancy rate per embryo transfer while another reports live birth per cycle started. Both figures can be mathematically correct, yet they describe different parts of the IVF pathway. A patient who sees only the percentages could easily believe they are comparable when they are not.
For international patients considering fertility treatment in Thailand, the most useful question is not simply “What is your IVF success rate?” It is: “What exactly does this rate measure, for which patients, during which period, and how relevant is it to my case?”
This keeps early attrition visible. If a cycle is cancelled before egg retrieval or produces no embryo for transfer, that outcome remains part of the picture. For someone deciding whether to begin treatment, this can be a useful perspective.
This starts the calculation later. It can help when looking at what happens after eggs have actually been collected, but it excludes patients whose treatment never reached retrieval.
This measures a more selected group: patients who reached transfer. It may be useful when discussing a particular transfer, but it should not be presented as the chance that every patient starting IVF will have a baby.
IVF is a sequence, not a single event. The useful statistic is the one that helps you understand your decision before treatment—not merely the percentage after several selection stages have already occurred.
A single egg retrieval may produce several embryos that can be transferred over time. Looking only at the result of the first transfer can therefore understate what happened from the retrieval as a whole. Cumulative live-birth measures attempt to capture outcomes across multiple fresh or frozen transfers arising from one retrieval or defined treatment period.
For a patient planning IVF treatment in Thailand, cumulative outcomes can be particularly relevant because they affect travel and budgeting. You may need one stimulation and retrieval trip but a later frozen embryo transfer visit. Ask whether the clinic's statistics follow all embryos from a retrieval and over what timeframe.
Clinics treating different age groups, diagnoses and levels of complexity will not necessarily produce directly comparable averages. A service taking on difficult cases may have a different headline rate from one with a more selected patient population.
If cycles with a poor response are cancelled before retrieval or transfer, those patients may disappear from later-stage denominators. Ask how cancellations are counted rather than assuming the transfer percentage describes everyone who began treatment.
Embryo stage, frozen versus fresh transfer, PGT selection and single-embryo-transfer policy can all affect the numbers. Safety matters too: a pregnancy-rate headline should never be separated from the clinic's approach to multiple pregnancy.

If this is your first IVF cycle, ask the specialist what information the cycle itself may provide. A responsible consultation should explain uncertainty rather than converting a population statistic into a personal guarantee.
Some clinics separate fresh embryo transfer from frozen embryo transfer while others combine them. A freeze-all strategy may shift the timing of transfer into a later cycle, so a retrieval-cycle statistic and a transfer-cycle statistic can describe different patient journeys. Ask whether the number you are shown includes fresh transfers, frozen transfers or both, and whether all embryos from one retrieval are followed over time.
A clinic reporting only day-five or day-six blastocyst transfers is describing embryos that have already passed several developmental stages. That can produce a different transfer-level rate from a service that includes cleavage-stage transfers. The useful comparison is not which policy sounds more advanced, but why the laboratory and specialist recommend a particular culture and transfer strategy for your case.
International patients often return home before delivery. If a clinic loses contact with patients after an early pregnancy scan, its live-birth dataset may be incomplete. Ask how overseas outcomes are collected and how missing follow-up is handled. A transparent answer about incomplete data can be more reassuring than an implausibly perfect statistic.
Donor-egg cycles can have a very different prognosis from own-egg cycles because the age and reproductive characteristics of the egg source are different. If donor and own-egg outcomes are combined, the headline may tell you very little about an older patient using her own eggs. Always ask for the category that matches the treatment you are actually considering.
Transferring more than one embryo may alter the chance of pregnancy in some circumstances, but it can also increase the risk of twins or higher-order multiple pregnancy. A clinic should be able to explain its embryo-transfer policy and how that policy affects both its reported success rates and patient safety. A higher pregnancy rate is not automatically a better outcome if it is achieved by accepting avoidable risk.
Published data describe a period in the past. Ask whether the same laboratory leadership, equipment, culture systems and clinical team are still in place. Historic results can be useful, but they should not be treated as though they automatically describe today's service if the people or systems that produced them have materially changed.
If you have already undergone fertility treatment, do not reduce the previous cycle to the words “it failed.” Ask for the detailed embryology and stimulation records. Bring medication doses and dates, follicle measurements, trigger details, retrieval numbers, mature-oocyte count, semen-analysis information, fertilisation results, embryo-development notes, grading, PGT reports, transfer details and pregnancy outcomes where available. If the records are incomplete, ask your previous clinic for them before you travel.
A younger patient with no previous treatment may want to understand the clinic's outcomes for her age band, expected ovarian response, blastocyst development and single-embryo-transfer policy. A general live-birth statistic can provide context, but the consultation still needs to explain diagnosis, treatment indication and what would change if the response differs from expectation.
A clinic-wide rate dominated by younger patients is not the relevant comparison. This patient needs age-specific own-egg data, a realistic discussion of expected egg numbers and embryo attrition, and a clear explanation of whether PGT-A is being considered. The chance of reaching transfer is part of the decision, not merely the success rate after transfer.
A patient who already has a tested embryo is asking a different question again. Transfer-specific outcomes, endometrial preparation, embryo-warming performance and the clinic's frozen embryo transfer pathway may be more relevant than stimulation or retrieval statistics. The denominator should match the stage at which the patient is entering treatment.
Success-rate comparisons can become so technical that patients lose sight of the practical relationship with the clinic. You may be communicating across time zones, making medication decisions from a hotel, attending repeated monitoring appointments and waiting for embryology updates that carry enormous emotional weight. Clear communication is therefore part of the treatment experience, not an optional extra.
Ask who answers urgent questions, how medication changes are communicated, whether you will see the same specialist, how embryology updates are delivered and who coordinates care if the plan changes. For an international patient, those details can matter as much as a small difference between two percentages that were never directly comparable in the first place.
