The fertility centre
Look at the whole IVF service around ICSI: assessment, monitoring, retrieval facilities, embryology, transfer, freezing and follow-up. A laboratory technique only works as part of a coordinated treatment pathway.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection — ICSI — changes one critical laboratory step in an IVF cycle: instead of placing prepared sperm with an egg and allowing fertilisation to occur, an embryologist selects a sperm and injects it directly into a mature egg.
That makes ICSI especially important to understand when male-factor infertility, previous fertilisation problems or particular laboratory circumstances influence the treatment plan. For an international patient considering Thailand, the useful comparison is not simply whether a clinic “offers ICSI”, but why it is being recommended, who is directing the cycle, what the embryology pathway includes and what the complete treatment will cost.

It is not a separate shortcut to pregnancy and it does not remove the need to understand the rest of the cycle.
Most of the patient-facing IVF journey remains familiar: assessment, ovarian stimulation, monitoring, egg retrieval, embryo culture and a transfer or freezing strategy. The defining ICSI step happens after egg retrieval in the embryology laboratory. Mature eggs are prepared and an embryologist injects a selected sperm directly into each suitable egg.
The technique was developed to help overcome particular fertilisation barriers, especially where sperm number, movement or morphology is a concern. It may also be considered after previous poor or failed fertilisation, with surgically retrieved sperm, or in other situations where the treating fertility team believes direct injection is appropriate.
ICSI does not guarantee fertilisation, embryo development, implantation or pregnancy. It addresses a specific part of the fertilisation process. That distinction matters when comparing clinics and advertised packages in Thailand.
Look at the whole IVF service around ICSI: assessment, monitoring, retrieval facilities, embryology, transfer, freezing and follow-up. A laboratory technique only works as part of a coordinated treatment pathway.
Your fertility specialist should explain why ICSI is being proposed in your circumstances and whether the recommendation follows semen analysis, previous cycle history or another clinical factor.
Establish whether ICSI is included in the IVF package or charged separately, how many eggs the quoted laboratory fee covers, and what additional embryo services may be required.

The decision to use ICSI should sit inside a broader fertility assessment. That can include ovarian reserve testing, ultrasound, semen analysis, previous treatment records and any investigations the fertility specialist considers relevant. International patients should send useful records early enough for the clinic to review them before travel.
Ask whether repeat semen testing is required in Thailand, whether a fresh sample is expected on retrieval day, whether freezing a backup sample is recommended and what would happen if the planned sample is unavailable or unsuitable.
This is also the point to establish whether treatment can begin partly at home or whether the Thailand clinic wants to control stimulation and monitoring from the outset.
Use the JLIT Fertility gateway to compare the provider, named fertility specialist and available published pricing together. Where a reliable fixed figure is not published, JLIT can request current options rather than presenting an invented price.
Your own protocol and timing are individual, but the sequence below shows where ICSI fits and why the rest of the IVF cycle still matters.
The fertility team reviews both partners where relevant, previous treatment and test results, then explains whether ICSI is appropriate.
Medication encourages multiple follicles to develop while ultrasound and, where required, blood tests monitor response.
Eggs are collected and assessed by the laboratory. Mature eggs suitable for injection proceed to the ICSI step.
An embryologist selects sperm and injects one directly into each suitable mature egg. Fertilisation is checked afterwards.
Fertilised eggs continue in culture. Depending on the plan, an embryo may be transferred or suitable embryos frozen for later use.

ICSI is commonly associated with male-factor infertility, but the decision can be more nuanced. Previous fertilisation results, the source and quality of sperm, the number of available eggs, planned embryo testing and the clinic's assessment can all affect the conversation.
Ask the fertility specialist to state the reason in plain language. If the explanation is simply that ICSI is routinely added to every IVF cycle, ask what benefit the clinic expects in your circumstances and whether conventional IVF was considered.
For international patients, getting that explanation before travelling also makes quotations easier to compare because you can distinguish a clinically proposed technique from a generic package inclusion.
ICSI is a fertilisation technique, not the end of the laboratory pathway. After injection, the laboratory checks for fertilisation and follows embryo development. Ask how and when updates are provided, what culture period is planned and how the clinic decides which embryos are suitable for transfer, freezing or further testing.
If PGT is being considered, clarify the additional steps and costs: embryo biopsy, genetic laboratory testing, freezing, storage and the later frozen embryo transfer. These can materially change both the treatment budget and the number of trips to Thailand.
Also ask how unused frozen embryos are stored, what the annual storage terms are and how future transfer cycles are organised for patients who live overseas.

Consultations, ultrasound, semen analysis and other investigations may sit before the treatment package begins.
Stimulation medicines vary by protocol and response. Confirm whether they are included or separately charged.
Egg collection, theatre or procedure-room fees, sedation or anaesthesia and immediate recovery should be identified.
Ask whether ICSI is bundled with IVF, separately priced, or linked to the number of mature eggs injected.
Extended culture, freezing, storage, biopsy, PGT and assisted laboratory services can create additional charges.
Flights, accommodation, transfers, appointment transport and flexibility for treatment-date changes belong in the same budget.
Treatment in Thailand often means several appointments, with free days or recovery time in between. Plan where you stay, how you spend those days and when you fly — then send it to JLIT alongside your treatment enquiry.
ICSI does not usually alter the need for stimulation, monitoring and egg retrieval, so the travel logic is broadly the same as an IVF cycle. The exact retrieval date can move as follicles develop, and the decision to transfer fresh, freeze embryos or undertake additional testing can change the later timetable.
Before booking inflexible travel, ask which tests can be completed at home, when you need to arrive, how many monitoring appointments are expected and what the clinic advises about flying after retrieval or transfer. If a partner is providing a fresh sperm sample, confirm when that person must be present.
JLIT can coordinate the practical layer around the clinic's timetable — provider enquiries, current pricing, accommodation, flights, airport transfers and local transport — while the fertility team controls the medical plan.
Direct injection can address a barrier at fertilisation, but treatment still depends on egg maturity, fertilisation, embryo development, uterine factors and many individual clinical variables. A strong provider discussion should separate what ICSI is designed to do from outcomes it cannot promise.
That is particularly important when comparing marketing claims. Ask for the outcome being described, the patient group behind the statistic and whether the figure refers to fertilisation, clinical pregnancy or live birth. Your specialist should interpret those numbers in the context of your own circumstances.

JLIT connects the parts international fertility patients otherwise have to research separately. Start with the treatment, compare relevant providers and specialists, review published pricing where available, request current quotations where it is not, and then organise the practical Thailand requirements around the clinic's timetable.
The treating fertility team determines whether ICSI is clinically appropriate. JLIT's role is to make the commercial and travel pathway clearer, keep the enquiry connected and help you move from research to a properly scoped Thailand treatment plan.
The wider treatment cycle is similar. The key difference is fertilisation: conventional IVF places eggs and prepared sperm together, while ICSI injects a selected sperm directly into a mature egg.
No. It can be valuable in particular circumstances, but the fertility specialist should explain why it is recommended for your case rather than treating it as an automatic upgrade.
No. Direct injection addresses one part of the fertilisation process but cannot guarantee fertilisation, embryo development, implantation, pregnancy or live birth.
Package structures differ. Some include ICSI, some price it separately and some publish different IVF/ICSI pathways. Obtain a written quotation showing the exact inclusions.
That depends on the treatment plan and sperm source. If a fresh sample is required, confirm exactly when the partner must attend. Ask whether a frozen backup sample is advisable.
PGT can form part of some IVF/ICSI pathways, but suitability and availability must be confirmed with the treating provider. It normally adds laboratory, freezing, testing and later transfer considerations.
The answer depends on where stimulation begins, monitoring, retrieval timing and whether a fresh transfer is planned. Ask the clinic for an individual calendar before fixing flights.
Yes. The Fertility enquiry can combine provider and specialist comparison with current pricing, accommodation, flights, airport transfers, appointment transport and other Thailand trip requirements.
