Before taking the keys, make sure you understand the bike, the paperwork and the agreement. These essentials help you ask the right questions.
Licence and documents
Check the motorcycle category on your driving licence and whether an International Driving Permit is required for your circumstances. Ask which documents the operator needs.
Inspect your motorcycle
Check tyres, brakes, lights, mirrors and helmet fit. Photograph existing scratches or damage with the operator before departure.
Understand your cover
Ask for the policy details in writing, including liability, damage excess, theft, exclusions and any restrictions on riding or vehicle type.
Deposits and return terms
Confirm the deposit, fuel policy, mileage, late-return charges, breakdown assistance and return location. Keep a copy of your rental agreement.
Find the right motorcycle.
Know what you are paying for.
Look beyond the daily price. Your total cost and riding experience depend on the motorcycle, inclusions and local conditions.
Daily, weekly and monthly rates can differ. Compare the total quoted price rather than just the headline daily rate.
Automatic scooters suit some journeys; manual motorcycles and larger touring bikes may have different licence and deposit requirements.
Check helmets, delivery, mileage allowance, insurance, roadside support and whether additional riders are permitted.
Expect mountain gradients, sharp bends, changing visibility and seasonal rain. Avoid riding beyond your experience, particularly on unfamiliar mountain roads.

Chiang Mai motorcycle rental FAQs
Do I need a motorcycle licence?
Riders should hold the appropriate valid motorcycle licence and any additional documentation required for their circumstances. A car-only licence is not sufficient for riding a motorcycle.
Does the rental price include insurance?
Do not assume so. Ask the operator to explain the exact policy, third-party liability, excess, exclusions and any optional cover in writing.
Can I leave my passport as a deposit?
Check deposit options before renting. Where possible, avoid surrendering your original passport and obtain a clear written receipt for any security deposit.
Are these rental operators JLIT partners?
No partnership is implied by inclusion in a preview. Any sponsored placement should be clearly labelled after agreement with the business.
