How motorbike insurance works in Thailand
Thailand has compulsory insurance required by law and optional voluntary cover that provides broader protection. They are not the same thing, and many drivers hold both.
Por Ror Bor — compulsory insurance
Required for registered vehicles in Thailand. It is mainly designed to provide basic compensation for bodily injury or death following a road accident. It does not provide normal cover for damage to your own car or another person's car.
Voluntary motor insurance
Optional additional cover for risks such as damage to vehicles, third-party property, theft, fire or other losses. The protection depends on the class selected and the individual policy terms.
The main voluntary motorbike insurance classes
You do not need to know the exact class before starting your enquiry. Simply tell us what you know — comprehensive, third-party, a class number or “not sure” — and the insurance professional can explain the available options.
Class 1
- Third-party injury and property liability
- Damage to your own vehicle, subject to the policy
- Theft and fire
- Often includes wider accidental-damage protection
Class 2+
- Third-party injury and property liability
- Own-car damage after a collision with another land vehicle
- Theft and fire
- Usually no cover for single-vehicle accidental damage
Class 3+
- Third-party injury and property liability
- Own-car damage after a collision with another land vehicle
- Normally no theft or fire cover
- Usually no single-vehicle accidental-damage cover
Class 3
- Third-party injury and property liability
- Normally no damage cover for your own vehicle
- Normally no theft or fire cover
- Limited compared with the higher classes
Important: Benefits, limits, deductibles, named-driver conditions, flood protection and exclusions vary by insurer and policy. The insurance professional is responsible for explaining the exact cover before you buy.
Which type may suit your situation?
These are general starting points only, not policy recommendations.
Newer or higher-value vehicle
Drivers often ask about Class 1 because it normally provides the broadest protection for the insured vehicle.
Older vehicle with meaningful value
Class 2+ or 3+ may be considered when collision protection is wanted but full Class 1 cover is not required or available.
Low-value vehicle or basic protection
Class 3 may be considered when the main priority is voluntary third-party liability rather than repairing the insured vehicle.
What can affect the premium and available cover?
The final price and policy terms are set by the insurer. Common factors include:
What the concierge will ask
The conversation is deliberately short. It gathers the core information needed to prepare a useful lead for an insurance professional.
- Whether you own, are buying or are renewing the vehicle
- Vehicle make, model and manufacturing year
- Approximate current value — not the original purchase price
- The province where the vehicle is mainly kept
- Private or commercial use
- The type or class of insurance you are looking for
- Claims during the last five years
- When the insurance needs to begin

Motorbike insurance questions
Common questions before arranging vehicle insurance in Thailand.
Is Por Ror Bor enough on its own?
Por Ror Bor provides compulsory basic protection for accident-related bodily injury or death. It does not normally cover repair costs for your own car or another person's vehicle, which is why many owners also arrange voluntary insurance.
What is the difference between Class 1, 2+, 3+ and 3?
Class 1 normally provides the broadest protection. Class 2+ and 3+ generally cover own-car damage only when there is a collision with another land vehicle, with 2+ normally adding theft and fire. Class 3 is primarily third-party voluntary cover. Exact terms vary.
Do I need to know which class I want?
No. Tell the concierge what you know, including “comprehensive”, “third-party”, a class number or “not sure”. The insurance professional can explain the policies available.
Can foreigners insure a vehicle in Thailand?
Eligibility and documentation depend on the insurer, ownership arrangement and vehicle. Submit the available details and the insurance professional can confirm the requirements.
Can I enquire before buying the vehicle?
Yes. State that you are buying the vehicle and provide the make, model, year and approximate value currently available.
Does JLIT provide the quotation?
No. Quotations, policy terms and insurance advice are provided only by legally authorised insurance professionals or insurers.
Is flood, roadside assistance or a replacement car included?
These benefits are not automatic across every policy. They must be checked in the specific insurer's schedule, wording and exclusions.
How quickly will someone contact me?
After submission, an insurance professional can review the enquiry and contact you using the details and preferred time you supplied.
