Antonelli takes United States GP pole with first F1 title in reach

Kimi Antonelli beat Max Verstappen to pole in Austin, putting the Mercedes driver in position to challenge for his first world championship on Sunday.
Kimi Antonelli secured pole position for the United States Grand Prix, beating Max Verstappen by 0.179 seconds as the Mercedes driver prepares for a possible championship-clinching race in Austin.
The 20-year-old Italian set a lap of 1 minute 34.035 seconds at the Circuit of the Americas in Saturday’s qualifying session. Verstappen will join him on the front row, with Red Bull team-mate Isack Hadjar third.
Antonelli can secure his first Formula 1 world title on Sunday, 25 October, if he wins and his two remaining challengers finish below the required positions. That would make him the youngest world champion in the sport’s history.
Red Bull splits Mercedes and Ferrari
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc qualified fourth, ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton in fifth. George Russell, Antonelli’s Mercedes team-mate and closest challenger in the championship standings, took sixth.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris followed in seventh and eighth respectively, leaving both behind the leading Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari cars.
The leading eight positions reported for Sunday’s start are:
- 1. Kimi Antonelli — Mercedes
- 2. Max Verstappen — Red Bull
- 3. Isack Hadjar — Red Bull
- 4. Charles Leclerc — Ferrari
- 5. Lewis Hamilton — Ferrari
- 6. George Russell — Mercedes
- 7. Oscar Piastri — McLaren
- 8. Lando Norris — McLaren
Racing Bulls drivers Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson completed the top 10 in qualifying, although Lindblad’s grid penalty means the qualifying order will not carry over unchanged to the race. Lawson did not set a time in the final qualifying segment.
What Antonelli needs to win the title
Antonelli entered the weekend with a 102-point advantage over Russell and a 111-point lead over Hamilton. A victory on Sunday, combined with Russell finishing ninth or lower and Hamilton fifth or lower, would secure the championship.
Both challengers therefore qualified inside the positions they need to defend to prevent that particular title-winning scenario: Hamilton starts fifth but needs fourth or better, while Russell starts sixth and needs eighth or better if Antonelli wins.
The Austin race is the 18th round of the championship and will run over 56 laps. Verstappen is seeking his fifth United States Grand Prix victory in six editions at the circuit.
Penalties alter the lower grid
According to Crash.net’s post-qualifying grid report, Lindblad will start 14th after a five-place penalty for taking his sixth internal combustion engine of the season.
The same report places Alpine’s Franco Colapinto 21st following a ten-place penalty for a fourth control electronics unit, with Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto at the back after multiple power-unit component changes.
Those sanctions underline the distinction between Saturday’s qualifying results and Sunday’s starting order. At the front, Antonelli has secured the best possible starting position for his first opportunity to turn his championship lead into the title.
