THE ESSENTIAL ANSWER

Yes, you can bring your dog to Thailand. But it is a regulated animal import.

For most owners, the hardest part is not buying a ticket. It is coordinating the dog's veterinary history, Thai Department of Livestock Development (DLD) import approval, an official health certificate from the exporting country, and an airline that will actually accept your dog on the chosen route.

Your six non-negotiables

  1. Microchip and matching identification documents
  2. Required vaccinations recorded in English
  3. Pre-arrival Thai import approval from the correct Animal Quarantine Station
  4. Export-country official veterinary health paperwork
  5. Confirmed airline pet reservation and suitable travel crate
  6. Animal Quarantine Station inspection and Customs declaration on arrival

These are planning essentials, not a substitute for the conditions on your issued permit.

BEFORE YOU BOOK ANYTHING

Start with your dog, not the flight search.

Age, health, breed, size, vaccination dates, microchip history and origin country can determine whether a proposed journey is possible. Your departure country may also require an official export certificate, endorsement, parasite treatment or an appointment with a government veterinarian.

For a very young puppy, an elderly dog, a dog with heart or breathing problems, or a brachycephalic breed such as a bulldog, discuss travel fitness with your vet before paying for flights. Airlines can refuse transport even where Thailand permits entry.

Critical distinction Thailand's import permission does not mean the airline has accepted the dog, and an airline booking does not mean Thai veterinary clearance is assured.
01 / ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The paperwork Thailand expects

The current Thai embassy guidance for dogs arriving from the United States lists the following vaccinations and documentation. Other origins and individual permits may add conditions: obtain written confirmation from your arrival airport's AQS.

01

Microchip

Have your vet scan the chip, record its number, and issue a certificate. The number should match the application, vaccination certificates and health documents exactly.

02

Rabies

A valid rabies vaccination is essential. Thai guidance says a dog must be at least 12 weeks old for its primary rabies vaccination; primary vaccinations normally require a 21-day waiting period.

03

Core canine vaccines

The published dog list includes canine distemper, infectious canine hepatitis and parvovirus. Check your combination vaccine record names these components clearly.

04

Leptospirosis

Thai guidance also lists leptospirosis vaccination. If a dog lacks a valid leptospirosis vaccination or the timing condition is not met, a negative test within the specified pre-departure period may be required.

05

Thai import approval

Apply to the DLD Animal Quarantine Station at the intended airport using Form R1/1 and supporting records. Do not assume an arrival-only application will be sufficient.

06

Official health certificate

Arrange the exporting country's required veterinary health certificate and government endorsement, where applicable. Carry originals and printed copies, not just photos on your phone.

Do not rely on a generic 'pet passport'. An EU/UK-style pet passport or routine vaccination booklet may help establish history, but it does not automatically replace Thailand's permit or the export country's official health certificate.
APPLICATION PACK

What to send to the Thai Animal Quarantine Station

According to Thai diplomatic guidance, a typical pre-arrival application contains:

  • Completed DLD Form R1/1 with owner, Thai address and dog details
  • Passport copy of the traveller or importer
  • Clear colour photograph of the dog
  • Flight itinerary and intended port of entry
  • Microchip implantation certificate
  • English-language vaccination record, including vet identity, signature and licence information

Keep the dog's name, breed, sex, date of birth, colour and microchip number consistent across all forms. If your itinerary changes, ask AQS whether approval must be amended.

02 / REALISTIC PLANNING WINDOW

A timeline that reduces last-minute surprises

This is a practical planning schedule, not a universal legal deadline. The actual timing is controlled by vaccination history, the exporting country, airline and Thai permit conditions.

8–12+ weeks before

Check eligibility and route

Ask the vet to review microchip, vaccines, health and fitness to fly. Research airline restrictions, crate size, transit rules and destination airport. Longer lead times may be needed for puppies or incomplete vaccination histories.

4–8 weeks before

Close documentation gaps

Complete vaccinations or tests as instructed. Confirm the exporting country's government health-certificate process and booking windows. Reserve a suitable pet transport option before buying non-refundable tickets.

Within the Thai permit window

Submit Form R1/1

Thai embassy instructions say to apply at least seven days and no more than 60 days before departure. They advise allowing roughly five to seven Thai business days after a complete submission and recommend applying around 30 days ahead.

Final days before departure

Obtain official export paperwork

Attend the vet or government endorsement appointment within the time limit set by the exporting country and Thai permit. Reconfirm airline pet acceptance, check-in location and transit handling.

Arrival day

Clear AQS and Customs

Present your dog and original paperwork to animal quarantine officers, obtain the required import documentation, then declare the dog to Customs and pay assessed charges.

Settle safely

Book a local veterinary review, update contact information linked to the microchip, prepare for heat and parasites, and establish safe transport and exercise routines.

03 / FLYING WITH YOUR DOG

Cabin, checked baggage or manifest cargo?

In cabin: some airlines allow small dogs in a compliant under-seat carrier, subject to limits and route-specific policies. Accompanied hold: some accept dogs as checked animals in a temperature-controlled hold. Manifest cargo: larger dogs or certain routes may require an air-cargo booking, often with separate cargo-terminal collection and Customs procedures.

Never assume that an airline carrying dogs on one route will do so on another. Ask whether the actual operating carrier accepts your dog's breed, weight (including crate), crate dimensions and connection time. Codeshares and aircraft changes matter.

For snub-nosed breeds, extreme heat, very long connections and medically vulnerable dogs, request specific written advice from the airline and veterinarian. Do not sedate a dog for flying unless a veterinarian has assessed the circumstances and the carrier's rules allow the medication.

THE CRATE & THE ROUTE

Eight airline questions to settle in writing

Is my dog accepted on every flight sector, including codeshares?
Cabin, checked animal or manifest cargo — which service is confirmed?
What are the maximum dog + crate dimensions and weight?
What crate construction, ventilation, locking and water arrangements are required?
Are there breed, age, temperature or seasonal embargoes?
Does the transit airport require a separate permit or handling agent?
Where do I check in and where will I collect the dog in Thailand?

04 / LANDING IN THAILAND

What happens at the airport?

Processes differ between accompanied passenger arrivals and manifest cargo. This is the usual sequence for a dog arriving with its owner; follow the instructions on your permit and from the airport AQS.

1

Immigration and collection

Complete your own entry formalities and collect your dog as directed by the airline. A cargo shipment may be collected at a separate facility.

2

Animal Quarantine Station

Present the dog, import approval, official health certificate, vaccination record, microchip details and passport. Veterinary officers may examine the animal and documents.

3

Thai import forms

Officials process the relevant DLD entry paperwork, including the Ror.6 approval and Ror.7 import permit/licence as applicable. Retain copies.

4

Customs declaration

Proceed to the Goods to Declare channel or cargo clearance procedure. Thai Customs states that imported pets are restricted goods and are not automatically exempt from duties and taxes.

5

Safe onward transport

Arrange a suitable air-conditioned vehicle, secure crate or harness, drinking water and an appropriate rest stop. Avoid exposing a newly arrived dog to prolonged heat.

Suvarnabhumi example: The airport identifies its passenger Animal Quarantine Station near baggage carousel 8. Manifest cargo is handled through a different cargo-area process. Confirm your actual terminal and opening hours before travelling.
Dog with its owner
After clearance, plan for the dog's welfare, not just the owner's transport.
05 / AFTER YOU ARRIVE

The first 30 days matter too.

Thailand's heat and humidity can be a major change. Give your dog time to recover from the journey, avoid midday walks, provide cool water and a quiet sleeping space, and keep food changes gradual.

Ask a local veterinarian about heartworm, ticks, fleas, intestinal parasites and region-specific risks. Review vaccination dates and the local approach to rabies boosters. Check your dog's microchip registry and ensure the contact details can reach you in Thailand.

Secure balconies, pools, gates and garden fences. Street dogs and traffic can be unfamiliar hazards. For apartments or condominiums, confirm pet permissions in writing before signing a lease.

06 / THE REAL COST

Budget for the entire journey, not just the ticket

There is no honest universal price for importing a dog: a small cabin-eligible dog on a direct route is a different proposition from a large dog arriving as cargo with a relocation agent.

Veterinary preparation

Microchip, vaccinations, blood tests if required, health examination and official certificate endorsement.

Air transport

Pet carriage fees, freight rate, fuel and handling charges, crate purchase and possible transit costs.

Thai clearance

DLD import-related fees, Customs duties or taxes where assessed, and possible cargo warehouse charges.

Optional agent services

Permit assistance, export paperwork, collection, airport handling, customs brokerage and door-to-door delivery.

Compare written itemised quotes. Ask whether government fees, veterinary work, airline freight, destination handling, storage, delays and home delivery are included. Avoid treating any online price estimate as a guaranteed tariff.

DIY OR PROFESSIONAL HELP?

When does a relocation company make sense?

Many owners can coordinate an uncomplicated accompanied-pet journey themselves, particularly with a direct flight, complete vaccine records and clear guidance from the airport AQS. A professional may be worthwhile when the route involves cargo, multiple countries, complex paperwork, a large dog, a tight relocation schedule or an unaccompanied shipment.

Ask a prospective agent who will submit the Thai application, who will arrange export certification, who takes custody during transit, who clears Customs and what happens if the flight is delayed or your dog is refused carriage.

QUESTIONS OWNERS REALLY ASK

Bringing a dog to Thailand: FAQs

Does Thailand require an import permit for a pet dog?

Yes. Thailand treats live animals as restricted imports. Contact the DLD Animal Quarantine Station for pre-arrival approval, then complete veterinary and Customs formalities on arrival.

How early should I apply?

Thai embassy guidance for arrivals from the USA says at least seven days and no more than 60 days before departure, with five to seven Thai business days often needed after complete documents are received. Around 30 days ahead is a sensible target if your dog's records are ready.

Which vaccinations does my dog need?

The published Thai list includes rabies, distemper, canine hepatitis, parvovirus and leptospirosis. Confirm timing, vaccine validity and any test alternative with the destination AQS and your exporting-country veterinarian.

Can I bring a puppy?

Potentially, but age and vaccination timing are critical. Thai guidance specifies at least 12 weeks of age at a primary rabies vaccination and a waiting period after primary vaccination. Airline minimum ages can be different. Obtain an individual eligibility assessment before booking.

Does my dog need a rabies titre test?

Not every route into Thailand requires one. However, the country you depart from, transit through or later return to may have additional rabies testing or documentation rules. Check the whole journey, particularly if you plan to return to the UK, EU, USA or Australia.

Are pit bulls, bulldogs or other breeds banned?

Do not assume a blanket Thai import ban from informal online lists. Thai consular guidance has stated there is no general breed restriction for dogs entering Thailand, but airlines and housing providers may impose their own restrictions. Confirm current DLD and airline policy for your particular breed.

Can my dog fly in the cabin?

Only if the operating airline permits pets in cabin on your exact route and your dog and carrier meet its limits. Many larger dogs travel as checked animals or manifest cargo.

Will my dog be quarantined?

Routine quarantine should not be assumed for every compliant, healthy pet, but animal quarantine officers have authority to inspect and take action where health or documentation issues arise. Obtain the current rules from the AQS.

Can I arrive without the original health certificate?

Do not plan to. Carry the original official certificate and supporting documents. An emailed permit or phone screenshot alone may not meet the requirements of the exporting authority, airline or Thai veterinary officials.

Do I pay import duty or tax?

Thai Customs says pets are not automatically exempt from duties and taxes. The actual assessment depends on the import circumstances; ask Customs or your agent before travel.

Can I use a pet relocation agent?

Yes. An agent can help coordinate transport and paperwork, but you should verify what it covers and who is responsible for each official step. See our company comparison guide.

What if my flight changes after my permit is issued?

Contact the issuing AQS immediately with the new itinerary and ask whether the approval needs amending. Also reconfirm the airline's pet reservation and export certificate dates.
