ATM Withdrawal Limits in Thailand
Two limits decide how much baht you get from a Thai ATM: the machine's and your South African bank's. Get them right and you pay the fees half as often — get them wrong and a R5,000 daily limit doubles your costs.

You've found an ATM, typed in ฿20,000 and the machine says no. It's one of the most common frustrations South Africans have in Thailand — and usually it has nothing to do with the Thai machine. It's your own bank's daily cash limit.
A ฿20,000 withdrawal is about R9,800, and with the Thai fee your card is charged about R9,900. Capitec's maximum normal daily cash limit is R5,000 — just under ฿10,000 once the Thai fee is added — and Standard Bank's maximum daily ATM limit is R10,000. Unless you set things up before you need them, you'll be taking out smaller amounts more often and paying the fees every time.
This guide explains the limits that decide how much cash you can get, the Thai machines' own maximums, how to raise your South African limits (including Capitec's temporary limit), what happens with the time difference, and what to do when you need more than any card allows. Limits were checked against the banks' own help pages on 22 October 2026.
The limits that affect your cash

The machine limit applies to each separate withdrawal. You can usually make another withdrawal straight away, but you'll pay the Thai fee — and your own bank's fee — again. The daily limit is set by your South African bank and caps the total cash you can take out in a day, wherever you are. All withdrawals, at any bank's machine, count towards it.
These limits interact. A Krungsri machine might allow ฿30,000 in one go, but if your card's daily limit is R5,000 — just under ฿10,000 including the Thai fee — that's the most you'll get. Equally, a generous daily limit doesn't help at a machine that stops at ฿20,000.
Thai ATM limits for foreign cards, by bank
These are the typical maximum amounts per withdrawal for a foreign card at the main Thai ATM networks in 2026. They vary between machines and change from time to time, so the screen always has the final word:
| ATM network | Typical max per withdrawal (foreign card) | Fee | Daily limit you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Krungsri (Bank of Ayudhya) | ฿30,000 | ฿220 | About R14,900 |
| Bangkok Bank | ฿20,000–30,000 | ฿220 | About R10,000+ |
| Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) | ฿20,000–30,000 | ฿220 | About R10,000+ |
| Government Savings Bank | ฿25,000 | ฿220 | About R12,400 |
| Krungthai Bank (KTB) | ฿20,000–25,000 | ฿220 | About R10,000+ |
| Kasikornbank (KBank) | ฿20,000 | ฿220 | About R10,000 |
| AEON | ฿20,000 | ฿150 (reported) | About R9,900 |
The "daily limit you need" includes the Thai fee, because it's added to the baht amount your card is charged — ฿20,000 plus ฿220 is about R9,912 at ฿2.04 to the rand. Don't confuse these figures with the daily limits on Thai bank cards you'll see quoted online; those apply to Thai account holders, not to visitors.
South African banks' daily cash limits
Your South African bank's daily cash limit applies abroad as well as at home. These are the limits published by the banks we could verify; most banks let you change your limit in the app within their maximum.
| Bank | Daily cash limit | In baht (approx.) | Can you take ฿20,000 at once? | Link |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Capitec — normal daily limit | Up to R5,000 | ฿10,200 | No — about ฿9,700 at a time once the Thai fee is added | See bank |
| Capitec — temporary limit (3 days) | Up to R10,000 | ฿20,400 | Yes | See bank |
| Capitec — temporary limit at a branch kiosk (same day) | Up to R30,000 | ฿61,200 | Yes, before you leave South Africa | |
| Standard Bank | Up to R10,000 (set in the app) | ฿20,400 | Yes, at the maximum setting | See bank |
| GoTyme, Bank Zero, FNB, Absa, Nedbank, Discovery, Investec | Set in the app — check yours | — | Check before you fly |
Capitec limits from Capitec's help centre; Standard Bank from its help centre (daily ATM limit up to R10,000), checked 22 October 2026. The temporary R30,000 cash limit is set at a self-service kiosk inside a Capitec branch and expires at midnight the same day. A high limit doesn't mean low fees — see our Thai ATM fees guide.
How the limits combine in practice
Here's what ฿40,000 — about R19,600, a week or two of cash — looks like on different set-ups:
| Card and daily limit | Best approach | Total fees | Days needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capitec, R5,000 a day | Five withdrawals of about ฿8,000 (R5,000 allows about ฿9,700 a day with the Thai fee) | R889 (R350 Capitec + ฿1,100 Thai) | Five |
| Capitec, temporary R10,000 | Two withdrawals of ฿20,000 | R356 (R140 + ฿440) | Two |
| Capitec, temporary R10,000, at AEON | Two withdrawals of ฿20,000 | R287 (R140 + ฿300) | Two |
| Standard Bank, R10,000 a day | Two withdrawals of ฿20,000 | R1,349 (R1,133 + ฿440) | Two |
The pattern is clear. A limit of about R10,000 lets you take a full ฿20,000 at once, which halves the number of withdrawals. But a high limit on a card with high fees still costs far more overall than a low-fee card — Standard Bank's R10,000 limit can't make up for its 2.75% conversion fee and R3 per R100.
The ideal is a low-fee card with its limit raised to about R10,000 for the days you need cash. Capitec's temporary limit does exactly that.
When your daily limit resets — and the time difference
South African banks reset daily limits on South African time, not Thai time. Thailand is five hours ahead of South Africa all year round — neither country changes its clocks — so midnight in Johannesburg is 5am in Bangkok.
That means your new "day" starts at about 5am in Thailand. A withdrawal at 11pm in Bangkok and another at 9am the next morning are on different South African days; one at 1am and another at 4am Thai time are on the same day.
Capitec's temporary limits work differently again: a temporary limit set in the app lasts for three days and then returns to your normal daily limit, and a temporary limit set at a branch kiosk expires at midnight the same day. If you hit your limit unexpectedly, wait until it resets rather than trying again and again — repeated declined attempts can trigger your bank's fraud checks.
How to raise your cash limit before you go
Most South African banks let you change your daily cash limit yourself in the app, within the bank's maximum. A few minutes before you fly saves a lot of frustration at a Thai ATM:
- Check your current limit in your banking app — usually under card settings or limits.
- Switch on international use for the card at the same time.
- Raise the daily cash limit to about R10,000 if your bank allows it, so a ฿20,000 withdrawal fits.
- On Capitec, use the temporary limit — up to R10,000 for three days — and set it again when you need it. It changes instantly in the app.
- Check your card-payment limits too. Hotel bills and deposits can be larger than your daily card limit; Capitec's maximum daily card-machine limit is R50,000, with temporary limits higher.
- Check your contactless limit. Capitec's default tap-to-pay limit is R1,000 — above that, insert your card and use your PIN, or raise the tap limit in the app.
- Lower your limits again when you're home.
A very high limit isn't always a good thing. If your card is stolen or cloned, the daily limit is also the most a thief can take out in a day. About R10,000 on your travel card is a sensible balance for Thailand.
Credit card cash limits, couples and long stays
Credit cards have their own limits — and their own costs. A credit card's ATM limit may be lower than its credit limit, and cash withdrawn on a credit card attracts interest from the day you take it, plus your bank's international ATM and conversion fees. A credit card is an emergency backup for cash, not a plan.
Travelling as a couple doubles your options. Each card has its own daily limit, so two travellers with a low-fee card each can take out twice as much in a day — and each has a backup if one card is lost or blocked. Carrying two cards yourself, such as Capitec and GoTyme, does the same.
On a long stay, think beyond daily limits. Over a winter in Thailand, your daily limit mainly decides how many fees you pay. Card spending and cash abroad also count towards your single discretionary allowance of R2 million a year. Beyond a few months, most people find a Thai bank account — with free withdrawals at their own bank's ATMs — easier than living within South African card limits.

When you need more than your limit
ATM limits are fine for spending money. They're not designed for a car deposit, a year's rent up front, a condo reservation or a visa deposit. For larger sums, other routes are faster, cheaper and safer:
Transfer to a Thai bank account
The best route for most large payments, if you have a Thai account. A specialist FX provider is usually far cheaper than a bank transfer.
Best for rent, deposits, propertyPay the business directly
Many landlords, car dealers and schools accept bank transfers. It leaves a record and avoids carrying cash.
Safer than cashPay by card
Your card-payment limit is usually far higher than your cash limit. Raise it temporarily for a big hotel or hospital bill.
Easy for billsBank counter withdrawal
Some Thai branches allow larger withdrawals with a foreign card and passport, but practice varies, and your daily limit still applies.
Ask firstFor the largest amounts — a property purchase, a retirement-visa deposit of ฿800,000, or moving savings — the exchange rate and timing can make a difference of tens of thousands of rand, and transfers count towards your annual allowances. That's worth planning properly rather than doing piecemeal through ATMs.
Our verdict
For most South African cards, ฿20,000 is the practical maximum per withdrawal in Thailand — and only if your daily limit is about R10,000. Capitec's normal maximum is R5,000 (just under ฿10,000 a day once the Thai fee is added), so use its temporary limit of up to R10,000 on the days you need cash; Standard Bank allows up to R10,000 but charges far more per withdrawal.
Set your limits before you fly, carry a second card such as GoTyme for a second daily limit, use AEON machines for ฿20,000 at ฿150, and for anything bigger than holiday cash, transfer to a Thai bank account instead.

Questions people ask
How much cash can I withdraw from a Thai ATM with a South African card?
Most Thai bank machines allow ฿20,000 to ฿30,000 per withdrawal with a foreign card, but your South African bank's daily limit usually decides. ฿20,000 plus the Thai fee is about R9,900, so you need a daily limit of about R10,000.
What is Capitec's daily withdrawal limit?
Capitec's maximum normal daily cash withdrawal limit is R5,000. You can set a temporary limit of up to R10,000 in the app, which lasts three days, or up to R30,000 at a self-service kiosk in a Capitec branch, which expires at midnight the same day.
What is Standard Bank's daily ATM limit?
Standard Bank lets you set your daily ATM limit up to a maximum of R10,000 in its app. All withdrawals, including at other banks' ATMs, count towards it.
Why was my withdrawal declined in Thailand?
Most often because the amount (plus the ฿220 Thai fee) is above your South African daily limit. Other causes are international use not switched on, a machine maximum, the wrong account type or a fraud check. Check your app, then try a smaller amount or raise your limit.
Does the ฿220 fee count towards my daily limit?
Yes. The Thai fee is added to the baht amount your card is charged, so a ฿20,000 withdrawal is charged as ฿20,220 — about R9,912.
When does my daily limit reset in Thailand?
On South African time. Thailand is five hours ahead of South Africa all year, so midnight in South Africa is 5am in Thailand.
Can I withdraw ฿30,000 at once with a South African card?
Only if your daily limit is about R14,900 or more and the machine allows it. With Capitec's temporary R10,000 limit or Standard Bank's R10,000 maximum, ฿20,000 is the most you can take at once.
Which Thai ATM is cheapest for South African cards?
AEON ATMs, widely reported at ฿150 for foreign cards and allowing ฿20,000 per withdrawal — usually the most a South African card's daily limit allows anyway.
Can I raise my limit while I'm in Thailand?
Usually yes, in your banking app, as long as you can receive one-time PINs or approve in the app. Keep your South African SIM active so approvals reach you.
Can my partner and I both withdraw the maximum?
Yes. Each card has its own daily limit, so two travellers with a card each can take out twice as much in a day — and each has a backup.
Can I use my Capitec card overseas for anything?
Capitec says its Main Account card may be used overseas for travel-related expenses and that it may ask for proof of travel. Supplementary cards can only be used in South Africa.
What if I need more cash than my limit allows?
For large amounts, transfer money to a Thai bank account, pay the business directly by transfer or card, or ask at a Thai bank branch. For property or visa deposits, a specialist FX provider such as Vita Capital is usually cheapest.
