Investors Trust is one of the more widely used names in international savings in Latin America, Asia and the Middle East, and many British expats come across it through advisers in the region. It's the global brand of the ITA Group, a privately owned group of insurance companies with its main insurer in the Cayman Islands, a sister company in Puerto Rico and an Asian company in Labuan, Malaysia.

The group has been rated A- (Excellent) by AM Best, the specialist insurance rating agency, for eight consecutive years, and AM Best describes its capitalisation as being at the strongest level on its scale. Its products range from flexible monthly savings plans to plans linked to the US stock market with a guaranteed minimum value at maturity, and lump-sum portfolios — all sold through independent financial advisers.

This profile explains who Investors Trust is, what its main products do and what they cost, the strengths of the group and the points worth considering, and how its plans fit the life of an expat in Thailand. If you're considering an Investors Trust plan — or already have one — Lawrence offers a free, no-obligation review.

Investors Trust is the brand of the ITA Group, a privately owned international insurer rated A- (Excellent) by AM Best, with its main company in the Cayman Islands. It offers Evolution savings plans (a contractual plan from US$100 a month, and more flexible Plus and Select versions from US$1,000 a month), an S&P 500 Index plan with a guaranteed minimum maturity value, other index and fixed-income options, and the Access Portfolio for lump sums. Plans are in US dollars, pounds or euros, sold through financial advisers. They suit long-term savers who can commit for the full term; early surrender and stopping payments can be costly, so the terms deserve close attention. Who Investors Trust is

Investors Trust is the global brand of the ITA Group, an international group of insurance companies. The group's main operating companies are:

  • Investors Trust Assurance SPC, based in the Cayman Islands — the main insurer for international clients.
  • ITA International Insurer, based and licensed in Puerto Rico.
  • ITA Asia Limited, licensed in Labuan, Malaysia, for Asian business.

The ultimate parent is ITA International Holdings, a privately held company owned mainly by family trusts of its founders, John and William Zelaya. The group has regional offices in Hong Kong, Dubai and Montevideo, with support in Miami, and sells through independent financial advisers in Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

AM Best's most recent full report on the group (December 2024) gave group total assets of about US$3.9 billion at the end of 2023, capital and surplus of about US$225 million, assets under management of US$4.3 billion by mid-2024, and no outstanding debt. It assessed the group's balance sheet and operating performance as strong.

The range covers three broad needs: regular saving into funds you choose (Evolution), index-linked saving with protection features (the S&P 500 and MSCI plans), and lump-sum investing (Access Portfolio, Fixed Income and Platinum).

Evolution: monthly savings into funds

Evolution is Investors Trust's main savings plan, and it comes in three versions to suit different savers.

Evolution (contractual)

The standard plan starts from US$100, £100 or €100 a month, over a fixed term of 5 to 25 years. Your payments are invested in funds you choose from a range of around 300 from major global managers, held directly so there are no extra layers of cost, with free switching. The plan rewards commitment: a welcome bonus of up to 105% based on your annual contributions, and loyalty bonuses of 7.5% of premiums after ten years and 5% every five years after that — provided all expected payments are made.

Evolution Plus and Select

For larger savers, from US$1,000 a month, Plus and Select offer much more flexibility: no fixed term and no surrender charges once the plan has run for a year. They don't receive bonus units, and they have different charging structures — a simpler, more flexible plan in exchange for the bonuses.

The choice between them comes down to commitment. If you're confident you'll save steadily for many years, the contractual plan's bonuses can add real value. If your income is less certain, or you may need access, the flexibility of Plus or Select may be worth more.

The S&P 500 Index plan: growth with a guaranteed floor

The S&P 500 Index Savings Plan is one of Investors Trust's most distinctive products. Instead of choosing funds, your plan's growth is linked to the performance of the S&P 500 — the 500 leading US companies — and it comes with a guaranteed minimum value at maturity, as a share of the premiums you've paid:

  • 10-year term: at least 100% of premiums paid.
  • 15-year term: at least 140%.
  • 20-year term: at least 160%.

It starts from US$200 a month and is held in US dollars. For a saver who wants exposure to the US stock market but worries about a crash just before maturity, the guaranteed floor can be very reassuring.

The guarantee comes with conditions, and they matter. According to independent reviews, it's lost if premiums stop for more than 90 days, if you reduce your premiums, or if you take partial withdrawals. The plan therefore suits people who are confident they can keep every payment going for the full term — and is less suited to anyone whose income may be uncertain. Your adviser should explain exactly how the guarantee works, and what happens if circumstances change.

Lump-sum options

For a lump sum, Investors Trust offers several routes:

  • Access Portfolio: a lump-sum plan investing in a portfolio of funds, typically from around US$25,000 to US$50,000.
  • Fixed Income: a guaranteed fixed-income contract, for investors who want certainty rather than market growth.
  • MSCI Index: an index-linked option tied to world markets.
  • Platinum: a solution aimed at larger investors.

As with any lump-sum investment, the key questions are the total yearly cost, any charges for leaving early, how the investments are chosen and whether the currency matches your future spending. Our guide to lump-sum investment planning for expats explains the options more widely.

Understanding the charges

Like most international savings plans, Investors Trust's plans combine several charges, and it's the total that matters. On the contractual Evolution plan, independent reviewers report a charge of 1.9% a year on premiums for the first ten years, falling to 0.35%, plus 1.5% a year on the plan's value and a monthly policy fee — before the charges of the underlying funds, which range from about 0.5% to 3% a year. One reviewer estimates the total plan cost at around 3.4% a year in the first ten years, falling to about 1.85% after that, before fund costs.

Those charges are offset in part by the welcome and loyalty bonuses, which is why the plan rewards people who save for the full term. They also explain why leaving early can be expensive: set-up costs are recovered over the term, and a plan surrendered in its early years can return much less than was paid in.

The practical lessons are simple. Ask your adviser for the total yearly cost in dollars or pounds, including fund charges; ask what you'd get back if you stopped after one, five and ten years; and compare it with alternatives such as an international platform. Our guide to charges on long-term savings plans shows how to compare them.

How your money is protected

Investors Trust's main strength is its financial position. AM Best rates the group A- (Excellent), with capitalisation at the strongest level of its scale, strong operating performance and no debt — and has affirmed the rating every year for eight years. Unit-linked plans invest your money in the funds or index-linked contracts you choose, and you can follow your plan online.

It's worth knowing that the main insurer is based in the Cayman Islands rather than the Isle of Man. Protections for policyholders differ from one jurisdiction to another, and the Isle of Man's policyholder compensation scheme doesn't apply to companies elsewhere. Ask your adviser which ITA Group company will issue your plan and what protections apply. As with any genuine provider, your payments should go to Investors Trust in your name, never to an adviser — see our due diligence guide.

Who Investors Trust suits

Investors Trust's plans tend to suit expats who:

  • Want to save regularly in dollars for a long-term goal, and are confident they can keep paying.
  • Like the idea of a guaranteed floor on stock-market growth, and can meet the conditions.
  • Value a strongly capitalised, highly rated insurer.
  • Want a low entry point — from US$100 a month on the contractual plan.
  • Have larger sums to save flexibly, through Plus or Select.

They may be less suitable for people whose income is uncertain, who might need their money back early, or who want the lowest possible cost on a simple index portfolio — for whom an international investment platform may be a better fit.

Investors Trust for expats in Thailand

  • Currency: plans are in dollars, pounds or euros — choose the one you'll spend, and move money into baht as needs approach. The S&P 500 plan is dollars only.
  • Keeping payments going: a dependable way to pay monthly premiums from Thailand protects your bonuses and any guarantee.
  • Thai tax: foreign income and gains brought into Thailand by a Thai tax resident can be taxable since 2024 — see our tax residence guide.
  • School and university fees: a plan timed to the fees can let growth pay a large share.
  • A possible move: plans move with you, but check how a change of country affects your plan.

Already have an Investors Trust plan?

Many expats took out an Investors Trust plan in Dubai, Hong Kong or elsewhere and have since moved to Thailand. If you're thinking of stopping or cashing in — perhaps because the charges look high or the value seems low — get a review first. Stopping a contractual plan or an S&P 500 plan early can lose bonuses, the guarantee or a large part of the value, while continuing, adjusting or switching funds may serve you far better.

A review typically looks at:

  1. Which plan you hold and which ITA Group company issued it.
  2. Where you are in the term, and what surrender charges still apply.
  3. Bonuses and guarantees you'd keep — or lose — by continuing or stopping.
  4. Your funds — diversified, competitive and right for your goals?
  5. The currency, against where you'll spend the money.
  6. Your options — continue, reduce, pause, partially withdraw or plan for maturity — and the effect of each.
  7. Beneficiaries — up to date?
  8. Thai tax on any money you bring in.

Three worked examples

Ben and Nok: twenty years of saving

Ben, 35, and Nok, 32, in Chiang Mai, want to save US$400 a month towards their daughter's university and their own retirement. They're confident in their income and like the idea of a guaranteed floor. Lawrence explains the S&P 500 plan's guarantee and its conditions, compares it with a flexible savings plan and a platform, and helps them choose the mix that matches their commitment.

Mark: an old plan from Dubai

Mark, 50, started an Evolution contractual plan in Dubai seven years ago and now lives in Pattaya on a lower income. He's thinking of stopping. A free review shows he's three years from his first loyalty bonus and that surrender charges would take a large slice of the value now. Lawrence helps him reduce his contributions within the plan's rules, switch to a worldwide fund mix and keep the plan running to the ten-year mark.

Paula: a lump sum

Paula, 58, has US$120,000 from a property sale and wants a portfolio she can draw from in retirement. Lawrence compares an Access Portfolio with an offshore bond and an international platform on total cost, flexibility and currency, so she can choose with all the facts in front of her.

Questions to ask before you start

  1. Which plan, and why rather than an alternative?
  2. Which ITA Group company will issue it, and what protections apply?
  3. What is the total yearly cost, including fund charges?
  4. What would I get back if I stopped after one, five and ten years?
  5. Exactly how do the bonuses and any guarantee work, and what would lose them?
  6. Which currency, given where I'll spend the money?
  7. How can I reduce or pause payments if my income changes?
  8. How is the adviser paid, and will they review it every year?

Your Investors Trust checklist

  • Set your goal and timescale before choosing a plan.
  • Be sure you can pay every premium for the full term.
  • Understand the guarantee and bonus conditions in writing.
  • Know the total cost and the surrender values.
  • Choose diversified funds and review them yearly.
  • Pick the right currency for your future spending.
  • Keep beneficiaries up to date.
  • Get a review before stopping or cashing in.

Keeping your plan secure

  • Use a strong, unique password for your online policy access.
  • Turn on two-factor sign-in wherever it's offered.
  • Use a private, protected connection on hotel, café and condo Wi-Fi.
  • Never share policy details with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.

Our verdict

Investors Trust is a strongly capitalised, AM Best A- rated international insurer with a broad range: Evolution savings plans from US$100 a month, an S&P 500 plan with a guaranteed minimum at maturity, and lump-sum options. Its plans reward savers who commit for the full term and keep every payment going — and can be costly for those who stop early. Understand the charges, bonuses and guarantee conditions, choose diversified funds and the right currency, and review the plan every year.
