Koh Samui → Chaiya: The Little-Known Seat of a Maritime Empire

A short drive from Surat Thani sits a small town that may once have been the beating heart of the Srivijaya empire — a maritime power that controlled trade across much of Southeast Asia over a thousand years ago, and whose evidence still stands here, largely unnoticed.

THE STORY OF THE WEEKEND

Was this quiet town once an empire's capital?

Chaiya is a small district of fewer than forty thousand people, and most visitors to the Gulf coast have never heard of it. Yet historians widely believe this modest town was connected to Srivijaya, the maritime empire that dominated trade routes across the Malay Peninsula and beyond from roughly the seventh to the thirteenth century — and some scholars argue the town's very name derives from "Sri-vi-ja-ya" itself, worn down over centuries of local pronunciation.

Wat Phra Borommathat: a stupa dated to the eighth century

Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya, a first-class royal temple, centres on a reconstructed stupa built in Srivijaya style — and the archaeological evidence backing that connection is remarkably direct. An inscribed stone dated to 775 CE, discovered nearby, describes a Srivijaya king erecting three stupas at this exact site, one of which is believed to be the ancestor of the structure standing today. Few religious sites anywhere in Thailand carry evidence this specific tying them to a named historical ruler over 1,200 years ago.

Suan Mokkh's forest monastery grounds, founded in 1932, once hosted the 14th Dalai Lama.

A bronze statue that changed a monk's life

In 1905, a bronze torso of Avalokiteshvara — a Bodhisattva figure dating to the seventh or eighth century, Srivijaya's own artistic era — was discovered near Chaiya's temples by Prince Damrong Rajanubhab, and now sits in Bangkok's National Museum. The discovery had an unexpected second life: it is widely credited with sparking the young monk Buddhadasa's own interest in southern Thailand's archaeology and history, an interest that eventually led him to found Suan Mokkh, a forest monastery, just outside town in 1932. Buddhadasa went on to become one of the most influential Buddhist teachers of twentieth-century Thailand — significant enough that the 14th Dalai Lama himself visited Suan Mokkh in 1972.

A stupa tied by inscription to a named Srivijaya king in 775 CE, a bronze statue that helped inspire one of Thailand's most influential modern monks, and a forest monastery that once hosted the Dalai Lama — Chaiya holds more genuine history than its size would ever suggest.

Chaiya National Museum: putting the pieces together

A small branch of the National Museum in Chaiya holds archaeological finds from the Srivijaya era, giving essential context to what might otherwise be a handful of disconnected old buildings. Seeing the museum's collection alongside the temples themselves turns a pleasant afternoon of sightseeing into something closer to an actual understanding of how deeply this stretch of coast was once woven into regional maritime trade, centuries before Ayutthaya or Bangkok existed.

Who this weekend is for

This route suits history enthusiasts specifically, and anyone drawn to genuinely under-visited sites rather than well-trodden heritage circuits. It particularly rewards travellers with an interest in Southeast Asian archaeology or Buddhist history, and pairs naturally with a broader curiosity about how much of the region's past remains only partially understood. It is a quiet, contemplative weekend rather than an active one — better suited to slow exploration than a packed itinerary.

What to look out for

Check Chaiya National Museum's opening hours before planning your day around it, since smaller regional museums sometimes keep limited schedules. Dress modestly at Wat Phra Borommathat, as with any active royal temple. Suan Mokkh operates as a genuine working monastery and meditation centre, so visit respectfully and check ahead if you hope to see specific areas of the grounds.
