Koh Samui → Koh Tao & Koh Nang Yuan: World-Class Diving and Thailand's Most Photographed View

Ninety minutes to two hours from Koh Samui sits an island that has quietly become one of the world's best places to learn to dive — and, a short boat ride further out, three islands joined by a sandbar that has to be seen to be believed.

THE STORY OF THE WEEKEND

Why divers from all over the world end up on Koh Tao

Koh Tao is a small island — barely twenty-one square kilometres — that has built an outsized reputation entirely around what lies beneath its water. Since the 1990s it has developed into one of the most popular diving destinations on earth, not through luxury or scale but through consistently excellent, affordable diving and a dive-school culture that has trained an extraordinary number of the world's certified divers. Over 130 species of hard coral and 220 species of reef fish live in the waters around the island, and the diving here suits complete beginners and experienced divers equally well.

The diving that built the island's reputation

Chumphon Pinnacle, one of the region's best-known dive sites, draws divers specifically hoping to encounter whale sharks, most reliably sighted in April and May. Closer to shore, sites suited to every level — from first open-water dives to advanced wreck and pinnacle dives — sit within a short boat ride of Sairee Beach, the island's main strip. For non-divers, the same reefs work just as well for snorkelling, and turtle and blacktip reef shark sightings are a regular feature of the island's boat trips rather than a rare bonus.

Koh Nang Yuan: three islands, one sandbar

Three islands joined by a single sandbar, submerged completely at high tide.

A short longtail ride from Koh Tao's Mae Haad Bay reaches Koh Nang Yuan, a genuinely unusual formation: what looks on a map like one island is actually three, connected by a sandbar so narrow you can stand with one foot in each of two completely different bays — a feature locals say is found nowhere else in the world. The sandbar disappears entirely underwater at high tide, and the short, steep hike to the viewpoint at the top of the tallest islet delivers one of the most photographed views in Thailand: the full sandbar and both bays laid out below in a single frame. The island is privately owned, with a modest entry fee and a strict ban on plastic bottles — bring a reusable one or buy water in glass on arrival.

A hunting party could stand on the sandbar between Koh Nang Yuan's islands at low tide and watch it vanish completely by the time they returned — a piece of geography genuinely rare enough to justify the boat ride on its own.

Who this weekend is for

This route suits divers and snorkellers above almost anyone else in this collection — whether that means a first taste of scuba through a beginner course or simply exploring reefs you already know how to dive. It also rewards photographers specifically drawn to Koh Nang Yuan's viewpoint, and travellers who want a genuinely active weekend rather than a purely relaxing one. It is a strong fit for solo travellers too, given how easily Koh Tao's dive-school culture makes it to meet people quickly.

What to look out for

Book diving or snorkelling trips a day ahead in peak season, when boats fill quickly. Koh Nang Yuan's viewpoint gets busy around midday — an early boat over gives a much quieter climb and better light for photos. Bring cash for the island's entry fee and remember the plastic bottle ban before you leave Koh Tao.
