This is where a Bangkok weekend starts to feel like a real journey

Koh Chang sits in Trat Province close to Cambodia, around 300 kilometres east of Bangkok. It is Thailand’s second-largest island, roughly 30 kilometres long and 14 kilometres wide, and much of its interior remains mountainous rainforest. That geography is what makes it fundamentally different from the flatter resort islands closer to Bangkok: roads bend around jungle ridges, waterfalls drop out of the interior, beaches occupy narrow strips between mountain and sea, and the ferry crossing creates a genuine sense that the city has been left behind.

For a two-night weekend, the journey is part of the story. Driving from Bangkok to the Trat coast generally takes four to six hours before the ferry, depending on traffic and stops. The crossing then carries cars and passengers onto Koh Chang, where one main road threads through the populated west coast and around parts of the island. Friday is therefore about getting there rather than trying to squeeze in sightseeing. Saturday belongs to the island; Sunday should stay deliberately light so the ferry and return drive do not become a race.

Koh Chang is the main island of Mu Ko Chang National Park, an archipelago of dozens of islands with coral reefs, beaches and protected marine landscapes. The island itself is heavily forested, while the surrounding waters open the weekend into snorkelling, diving and island-hopping. That combination of rainforest and sea is the reason Koh Chang can carry a much richer weekend than a simple beach break.

A mountain island rather than a strip of beaches

Koh Chang means “Elephant Island”, a name commonly linked to the shape of its mountainous outline rather than to the animals later associated with tourism. The interior is rugged enough that development concentrates around the coast. The west side contains most visitor accommodation and the familiar sequence of White Sand Beach, Pearl Beach, Klong Prao, Kai Bae, Lonely Beach and Bailan before the road reaches Bang Bao in the south.

White Sand Beach

White Sand Beach is the easiest introduction after arriving by ferry. It has the greatest concentration of shops, restaurants and practical services, but the northern end still delivers the classic Koh Chang combination of sand, palms and a steep green backdrop. It is useful on Friday because you can arrive, eat and stop moving.

Klong Prao and Kai Bae

Farther south, Klong Prao spreads around a broad beach and river system and feels greener and less compressed. Kai Bae adds viewpoints and easy access to offshore islands. Both make strong bases for travellers who want beach time without being tied to the busiest part of the island.

Bang Bao and the southern coast

Bang Bao grew as a fishing settlement around a sheltered bay and long pier. Today it is also one of the principal departure points for diving, snorkelling and island boats. Even if you are not boarding a boat, the southward drive reveals how quickly Koh Chang becomes more rural once the main west-coast resort belt thins out.

The east coast

The quieter east side is frequently missed. Salak Phet and Salak Khok retain mangroves, fishing-community landscapes and a much slower atmosphere. For repeat visitors, this side explains Koh Chang better than another afternoon on the main beaches.

Klong Plu is the headline waterfall, but the forest is the real attraction

Klong Plu Waterfall is one of Koh Chang’s signature inland stops. A forest walk leads to a substantial pool beneath the falls, and in wetter months the water can be powerful. The national-park setting is a reminder that the island’s beaches occupy only its accessible edges; the steep interior remains the dominant physical feature.

Than Mayom on the eastern side adds another historic waterfall landscape. Conditions vary sharply with season, so waterfall expectations should always match recent rainfall. In the wet season the island becomes intensely green and dramatic, but trails, sea conditions and mountain roads demand more caution.

The sea matters just as much. Koh Rang and the smaller islands south and west of Koh Chang are the focus of many snorkelling and diving trips. A day on the water can include coral gardens, clear-water swimming and multiple island stops, turning Saturday into the weekend’s major experience rather than trying to drive every road on Koh Chang itself.

The monsoon changes Koh Chang more than it changes many Bangkok escapes

Trat receives substantial southwest-monsoon rainfall. The wetter period generally runs from May into October, when the island becomes brilliantly green but seas can be rougher and smaller-boat activities may change or cancel. The drier high season from roughly November through the early months of the year is the easiest period for a short weekend where ferry timing and a boat day matter.

That does not make the green season a mistake. It can be beautiful, quieter and better value, with waterfalls at their strongest. It simply requires a different mindset: check marine conditions, avoid overloading the itinerary and accept that the forest rather than the postcard-blue sea may become the star.

The ferry is part of the route, not a footnote

From Bangkok, the road journey to Trat is commonly four to six hours. Car ferries cross from the mainland around Ao Thammachat/Laem Ngop area to Koh Chang, after which the island road immediately begins climbing and bending around the northern mountains. Build margin into Friday. Ferry queues, Bangkok traffic and darkness on unfamiliar island roads are a poor combination.

A car gives the most flexibility, particularly for waterfalls, viewpoints and moving between beaches. Songthaews operate on the main tourist side of the island, while motorbikes are widely available but should not be treated casually: Koh Chang’s steep gradients, sharp bends and wet roads are significantly more demanding than flat resort areas.

For travellers willing to spend more time getting somewhere genuinely different

Koh Chang suits couples who want a substantial island escape, families who can handle the road journey, divers and snorkellers, nature travellers and anyone who wants the combination of forest, waterfall and beach rather than nightlife alone. It is less suitable if Friday departure cannot happen until late evening; in that case the transport consumes too much of a two-night weekend. Give it the time it needs and it becomes one of the most complete escapes in the Bangkok weekend collection.
