Six standout beach clubs around Thailand — each chosen for a different kind of day rather than for belonging to the same destination.
There is a particular kind of holiday decision that sounds ridiculous until you are standing in Thailand trying to make it: which beach club?
Not which beach. That is a different question. A beach is sand, sea and somewhere to put a towel. A beach club is a decision about where you may spend six or eight hours: where you will have lunch, where you will swim, what music you will listen to, what sort of crowd will be around you and whether sunset means another cocktail or your cue to leave.
Thailand now has everything from barefoot places where the sea remains the main attraction to large purpose-built clubs with pools, cabanas, restaurants, DJs and bottle service. Phuket has the greatest concentration, but a national collection should not simply be six versions of Phuket.
So these are not the six biggest clubs and they are not six places that all photograph the same. They are six JLIT picks in six different coastal destinations, each offering a different reason to lose an afternoon — and probably the evening.
Which JLIT Beach-Club Pick Is Right for You?
Thailand's beach-club scene is too varied for a useful one-to-six ranking. The better question is what sort of day you want: polished all-day Phuket, a Samui sunset, barefoot Phangan, Krabi scenery, a social Pattaya pool afternoon or a calmer Hua Hin lunch beside the sea.

The best beach club is the one that matches the day you actually want.
Catch Beach Club
If we are allowing ourselves only one Phuket entry, it has to earn it. Phuket's beach-club scene is enormous, and that is exactly why Catch makes sense as the JLIT all-rounder.
Catch does the day-to-night progression properly. Arrive early and it still feels like a beach day: pool, loungers, lunch, sea and drinks. The afternoon gradually changes gear, the music becomes more important and sunset gives the whole place a second wind.
This is polished Phuket. If what you want is an empty patch of sand, a cheap beer and nobody knowing where you are, there are better choices. Catch is for someone who actively wants the club part of beach club.
It also works for more than one kind of visitor. Couples fit. Groups fit better. A long lunch that accidentally becomes sunset fits perfectly. If somebody landed in Phuket and said, “I've never done a proper Thailand beach-club day. Where should I start?” this is where we'd send them.

Nikki Beach
Samui changes the rhythm. Nikki Beach sits at Lipa Noi on the island's quieter western coast, and western coast means one useful thing: sunset.
This is the most overtly occasion choice on our list. Birthday, anniversary, group holiday, or simply a day where nobody wants to organise anything more complicated than moving from pool to lunch to daybed to sunset.
Nikki Beach is a polished international beach-club product on a Thai island. That is not a criticism. Sometimes you want a rustic bar and sometimes you want somebody to bring lunch to your daybed. Nikki is the second one.
The horizon does much of the work. Stay long enough and the day naturally builds towards the sun dropping across the Gulf.

Harmony Beach Club
Koh Phangan is internationally famous for partying on a beach. That does not mean its beach-club culture has to look like Phuket.
Harmony gives us something we did not want to lose by choosing six expensive resort clubs: Phangan. It combines beach seating, pool, food, drinks and music without feeling as though somebody has tried to transplant Saint-Tropez onto Ban Tai.
This is the choice for travellers who want a social beach-club day but do not particularly want velvet-rope theatre. The island's mix of solo travellers, couples, long-stayers and people who somehow planned a week and stayed for months suits it.
Harmony is not here because it is the biggest. It is here because it belongs where it is.

The Beach Club Krabi
Krabi has an unfair advantage: scenery. A beach club can spend a fortune on architecture, landscaping and furniture. It cannot manufacture Krabi's horizon.
The Beach Club Krabi is our scenery pick. This is not the one we'd approach by asking when the party starts. We'd ask when the light changes.
Come in the afternoon. Swim. Eat. Have a drink. Do not schedule another activity immediately afterwards. Let the day run. For couples especially, Krabi offers a version of beach-club luxury that still feels attached to the landscape.
Some clubs could be transplanted from one country to another without anyone noticing. Krabi should not feel like that. You should know where you are.

Alexa Beach Club
Pattaya gets dismissed surprisingly often in conversations about beaches. Move south toward Jomtien and Na Jomtien and the equation changes.
Alexa combines beachfront, a substantial pool, restaurant, bars and music into a proper stay-for-the-afternoon venue. This is our group pick: the place we'd send four or six friends who want to spend the afternoon together without constantly asking what everyone is doing next.
Pool. Drinks. Music. Food. Sunset. Enough going on to carry the afternoon.
It also shows another side of Pattaya. The city may be famous for nightlife, but not every social day has to begin at 10pm.

Oceanside Beach Club & Restaurant
And finally, we calm everything down. Hua Hin does not need to pretend it is Phuket.
Oceanside is much more food-and-drink-led than the giant day-club model. It gives us open-air dining, cocktails, sea views and the sort of afternoon where lunch can stretch without anybody needing to relocate.
That is precisely why it belongs here. Six DJ-heavy pool clubs would make a terrible list. Oceanside represents the other end of the spectrum.
You come because you want to talk to the person you are with. Radical concept.

What Exactly Are You Paying For?
This is worth understanding before walking into a Thai beach club and wondering why a bed costs more than your hotel room.
At the premium end, you are buying a package of things: location + furniture + service + pool + music + food + drinks + facilities + the right to occupy a desirable bit of real estate for several hours.
Many beach clubs use minimum spend rather than simply charging for the bed. That can mean committing to spend a certain amount on qualifying food and drinks in return for using a particular bed, cabana or seating area.
Never assume. Ask whether there is an entrance fee, whether there is a minimum spend, whether it is per person or per bed, what counts towards it, and how many people can use the space.
Beach or Pool?
Not every beach club offers an equally good beach experience. Some are effectively pool clubs beside the sea. Some have excellent sand but modest pools. Some put almost all the emphasis on dining.
If swimming in the ocean matters to you, do not merely search for a beach club. Check the actual beach, tide and seasonal conditions.
Do You Need to Book?
For lunch at a quieter venue on an ordinary weekday, possibly not. For a prime sunset bed at a famous club in high season, we would. For a special event with a visiting DJ, definitely.
Beach clubs sell location within the location. Getting inside and getting the bed you actually wanted are not necessarily the same thing.
What Time Should You Go?
For a long beach day: arrive around lunch, eat, swim, settle in and let the afternoon happen.
For sunset: arrive early enough that you are not walking through the entrance as the sun disappears.
For a party: check the event programme. A venue that is mellow at 2pm can become completely different after dark.
For dinner: places such as Oceanside work perfectly well without committing to an entire beach-club day.
Couples
This is where beach clubs make tremendous sense. You do not need to organise five separate things. Lunch, swimming, drinks, sunset and dinner can all happen in one place.
Krabi if scenery matters. Samui if it is an occasion. Hua Hin if you want to talk. Phuket if you want the full club experience.
Groups
Groups are where minimum-spend models can become considerably more logical. A cabana that looks expensive for two may work perfectly well when divided between six people who intended to eat and drink anyway.
Alexa and Catch are our strongest group choices from these six. Just establish the rules before everybody starts ordering. Splitting a beach-club bill after six hours of cocktails is not the moment to discover that one person thought the cabana was free.
Are Beach Clubs Good for Solo Travellers?
Some are excellent. A social pool club can be easier alone than a formal restaurant because people are already moving between the bar, pool, beach and communal spaces.
Harmony would be particularly high on our list for solo travellers. A giant cabana designed for eight people is less useful; individual loungers, the bar or restaurant seating often make more sense.
Families
Do not assume beach club means adults only. Some actively welcome families during the day. Others become adult-oriented at particular hours or impose age restrictions around pools and events.
If you are taking children, check before booking: pool access, minimum age, event restrictions, daybed capacity and when the venue changes from daytime operation to evening programming.
The Weather Problem
A beach club is one of the few places where you can spend serious money booking furniture whose principal feature is that it sits outside. Thailand occasionally responds to this arrangement with rain.
Andaman destinations such as Phuket and Krabi and Gulf destinations such as Samui do not follow identical weather patterns, so a national guide cannot pretend there is one universal beach-club season.
Check the forecast. More importantly, check the cancellation or weather policy if you are prepaying. A tropical shower can pass quickly. A full monsoon afternoon is a different proposition.
Build Your Beach-Club Day
Phuket: late breakfast, arrive at Catch before the afternoon fills, swim and have lunch, then stay through sunset.
Samui: make Nikki Beach the day's main event. Arrive relaxed, eat properly and stay for the west-coast sunset.
Phangan: take Harmony at Phangan pace: beach, pool, food, sunset and music. Check the programme if you are planning around an event.
Krabi: arrive mid-afternoon and leave enough daylight to appreciate the landscape before sunset.
Pattaya: take friends to Alexa after lunch and let the pool-and-music side build through the afternoon.
Hua Hin: treat Oceanside as a long lunch that has permission to become cocktails and dinner.
Beach Club or Just Go to the Beach?
This may be the most important question in the article.
Sometimes the correct answer is: just go to the bloody beach.
Thailand has extraordinary beaches that require no DJ, infinity pool or minimum spend. If what you want is sea, sand, a book and peace, a beach club can actively make your day worse.
Choose a club because you want what the club adds: service, pool, food, music, furniture, social life and facilities. Not because somebody on Instagram made you think a Thai beach requires a cabana.

Catch Beach Club on Bang Tao. Phuket has many more clubs worth exploring, but Catch gives a first-time visitor a strong all-round introduction.

There is not a single best beach club in Thailand, and pretending otherwise would be nonsense.
Phuket does scale exceptionally well. Samui does resort luxury and island sunsets. Phangan brings its own barefoot personality. Krabi has scenery no interior designer can compete with. Pattaya knows how to create a social day. Hua Hin knows that sometimes people would quite like to hear each other speak.
So do not choose the most famous name. Choose the day you want.
If that means a cabana, DJ and six friends around a pool, Thailand can provide it. If it means lunch beside the Andaman Sea with nowhere else to be, it can provide that too.
And if, after reading all of this, you decide you would rather buy a cold drink, walk 200 metres down the beach and sit under a tree? We will not argue with you. That is a pretty good day as well.
