Thailand’s festival calendar mixes nationwide celebrations with events that belong unmistakably to one province or community. Exact dates can move with lunar calendars and annual programming, so use this guide to choose the event and destination, then confirm the current year’s programme before booking transport or accommodation.

Songkran
Thailand’s biggest shared celebration: temple traditions by morning, water fights, music and street celebrations later in the day. Bangkok’s biggest programmed zones regularly include Benchakitti, Silom, Khao San, Siam and the riverside.

For the biggest events, accommodation near the action can sell out or jump sharply in price. Book the destination first, then work backwards through transport. For Songkran and Loy Krathong especially, assume road closures, slower transfers and crowded public transport around headline zones.
