Hua Hin → Chumphon: The Gateway South Most Travellers Rush Straight Through

Four to five hours south of Hua Hin, Chumphon is where mainland Thailand hands off to the islands — and where 240 kilometres of genuinely quiet coastline sit almost entirely ignored by travellers racing for the ferry to Koh Tao.

THE STORY OF THE WEEKEND

Why Chumphon deserves more than a ferry-terminal stopover

For most travellers heading down Thailand's Gulf coast, Chumphon means exactly one thing: the train station or ferry pier that connects mainland Thailand to Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. Very few stop to notice that Chumphon itself has 240 kilometres of coastline and 44 islands of its own, almost entirely undeveloped by comparison with the destinations most visitors are rushing toward. This weekend treats Chumphon as a destination in its own right rather than a transit point to somewhere else.

Thung Wua Laen: "Running Bison Beach"

The pick of Chumphon's mainland beaches, Thung Wua Laen, takes its evocative name from local folklore — a tale of a hunter chasing a gaur that ran off into the forest at sunset, laen meaning "run" in the local dialect rather than the more commonly translated "play." Whatever the exact story, the beach itself needs no embellishment: three kilometres of powdery white sand shaded by drooping coconut trees, with a gentle, shallow entry into calm water. Unlike Hua Hin or Koh Samui, you will not find rows of resort chains here — Chumphon's beaches remain relatively undeveloped, which is precisely the appeal for travellers who have already done the more built-up stretches of coast.

Koh Tao: world-class diving, a short ferry away

Koh Tao, part of the Chumphon Archipelago, offers some of the Gulf of Thailand's best diving.

Chumphon serves as the main mainland gateway to Koh Tao, a compact 21-square-kilometre island that has developed into one of the world's most popular diving destinations since the 1990s. Over 130 species of hard coral and 220 species of reef fish populate its waters, with Chumphon Pinnacle — a dive site named for the province rather than the island — drawing divers specifically hoping to spot whale sharks, most commonly seen in April and May. A day trip out and back is entirely feasible from a Chumphon base, letting you experience the island's diving without needing to commit to staying there overnight.

Thailand Diving & Marine Hub

Dive sites, operators, seasons and conditions right across the country — from Koh Tao to the Andaman coast.

Most visitors see Chumphon only through a ferry-terminal window on their way to Koh Tao. Stay two nights instead, and you get 240 kilometres of coastline, a naval hero's shrine, and the same world-class diving as a manageable day trip.

The Prince of Chumphon: naval hero and reluctant royal

On a hillside at Hat Sai Ri beach stands one of Thailand's most visited naval shrines, dedicated to Prince Abhakara Kiartivongse, the twenty-eighth son of King Rama V. Trained in naval engineering in Britain, he returned to modernise and reorganise Thailand's navy so thoroughly that he was posthumously granted the title "Father of the Royal Thai Navy" in 1993. He spent his final days recuperating at this exact spot on Hat Sai Ri before his death in 1923, and the shrine here — built in the shape of a warship's bow — remains the most significant of over 200 memorials to him found across the country, drawing fishermen and sailors who consider him a protective figure to this day.

Who this weekend is for

This route suits travellers who want a genuine change of pace and don't mind the longer drive to get there — it particularly rewards those interested in diving, quiet undeveloped beaches, or simply seeing a working transit town that most people never actually stop in. It is a good fit for a slower, more exploratory kind of traveller rather than someone seeking polished resort facilities; Chumphon's appeal lies specifically in what it lacks compared with its more famous island neighbours.

What to look out for

Book Koh Tao ferry tickets and dive trips a day ahead where possible, since schedules are more limited than from more established hubs like Surat Thani. The drive from Hua Hin is genuinely long — consider breaking the journey, or taking the train instead, which runs directly along this stretch of coast. Chumphon's beaches are relatively undeveloped, meaning fewer facilities directly on the sand than at more built-up destinations — pack accordingly.
