Koh Kood deserves more than a pin on the map.

Koh Kood sits near the Cambodian maritime border and feels far more remote than its map position suggests. There is no dense island town; roads cut through forest between beaches, waterfalls and small communities.

Klong Chao is the practical centre for many first visits, combining a beautiful beach with restaurants, resorts and access inland. Farther north and south, bays become quieter and the island’s scale becomes more apparent.

Klong Chao Waterfall is the classic inland stop, with forest and freshwater giving the weekend a break from salt water. Other cascades become more or less impressive depending on season.

Fishing communities, particularly around Ao Salat and Ao Yai, show a working side of the island. Stilt houses, piers and seafood restaurants make a useful counterweight to resort beaches.

The sea is the headline: clear water, kayaking, snorkelling and long beach afternoons. Food follows the coast with fish, crab, squid and Thai curries, alongside increasingly polished resort dining.

From Pattaya, Koh Kood deserves three nights if possible. The transfer is too long to treat the island as a rushed two-night tick-box trip.

Koh Kood combines some of the clearest water in the eastern Gulf with a heavily green interior. Khlong Chao Waterfall, mangrove waterways and forest roads mean the island should never be reduced to a resort beach. The landscape is the attraction, and the distances reward a full weekend rather than a rushed day.

Fishing villages such as Ao Salat and Ao Yai keep the working island visible. Eat seafood where the boats are part of the view, then contrast that with a quiet west-coast sunset. Koh Kood has little interest in nightlife; its value is water, forest, villages and the feeling of having enough time.

Other waterfalls and forest roads reveal how undeveloped much of the island remains. A scooter can open the island up, but road surfaces, rain and darkness deserve respect; this is not the place to rush between pins.

Ao Salat and Ao Yai show the working maritime side of Koh Kood. Houses stand over the water, boats line the piers and seafood restaurants connect directly to the fishing economy. Spending time in one of these villages keeps the weekend from becoming a sequence of resort beaches and gives the island a human story.

What to eat

Seafood is central: crab, squid, prawns and fish are at their best near the fishing villages. Coconut, tropical fruit and simple Thai dishes dominate elsewhere. The strongest meals are often the least elaborate — fresh catch, chilli, lime, fish sauce and rice — eaten with the water in front of you. Leave room in the itinerary for exactly that.
