Koh Jum deserves more than a pin on the map.

Koh Jum sits off the Krabi coast between the mainland and Koh Lanta, but its personality is very different from either. It is a lived-in island first and a resort destination second, with fishing, rubber, small-scale agriculture and family businesses still shaping daily life.

The island is also known as Koh Pu, particularly in the north around the forested mountain. Both names are used locally. That dual identity hints at an island made up of distinct village areas rather than one continuous tourist strip.

The south also includes Buddhist community life, while the wider island has connections to the Urak Lawoi, the Andaman sea people whose cultural history predates modern tourism. The western shore is the holiday face of Koh Jum: long, quiet beaches and sunset views across the Andaman. The eastern side is more closely tied to piers, mangroves, fishing boats and the mainland. Crossing between the two makes the island easier to understand.

Koh Pu mountain dominates the north. Roads become smaller, development thins out and the landscape feels more enclosed by forest. The south and centre are flatter, making scooters and bicycles practical for confident riders, although surfaces and weather can change conditions quickly.

There is deliberately not a huge checklist of attractions. The experience is a beach at breakfast, a village road, a fishing boat, lunch in a family restaurant, a swim, a viewpoint and sunset. Travellers who need malls, beach clubs or a dense nightlife schedule should choose somewhere else.

Families who enjoy simple beach time can do very well here, especially in villa accommodation. Couples get privacy and sunset; solo travellers get a safe-feeling, low-key island but should expect quiet evenings; photographers and writers tend to appreciate the lack of visual clutter.

Food follows the island: seafood, curries, grilled fish, roti, rice dishes and uncomplicated restaurants. Eating locally is part of the cultural experience, particularly away from resort menus.
