A chemical peel is not one treatment. It is a controlled resurfacing technique whose depth, acid, concentration and contact time should be matched to your skin, the problem being treated and the amount of recovery you can realistically accommodate.
That makes the consultation more important than the word peel. A light brightening peel before a holiday and a deeper corrective peel for pigmentation or texture can have very different preparation, risk and downtime. In Thailand, the useful comparison is therefore not simply price per session—it is peel type, practitioner judgement, skin-type suitability, aftercare and the complete treatment plan.
Chemical peels work by creating a controlled chemical injury at a selected depth so damaged surface cells are shed and renewal is stimulated. That broad description covers a wide range of treatments. Some are designed primarily to freshen dull skin and improve superficial roughness; others are used as part of a plan for acne, post-inflammatory marks, uneven pigmentation, fine lines or more established photodamage.
The first decision should therefore be the diagnosis. Brown marks may represent freckles, solar lentigines, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or melasma, and those conditions do not necessarily respond to the same strategy. Active acne, sensitive skin, recent tanning, certain medicines and a history of abnormal scarring can also change the risk calculation.
The names used by clinics vary, but thinking in terms of treatment depth helps you compare what is actually being proposed.
Acts mainly in the outer epidermal layers. Often used for brightness, mild congestion, superficial pigment and texture. Recovery can be modest, although dryness, flaking or temporary sensitivity may still occur.
Ask:Which acid, what strength, how many sessions and what should I stop beforehand?
Creates a more substantial controlled injury and therefore requires more deliberate patient selection and aftercare. It may be considered for more established pigmentation, textural change or photodamage.

Moves beyond the casual “lunchtime peel” category. Deeper chemical resurfacing has greater recovery and risk and should be approached as a medical procedure with appropriate practitioner expertise and monitoring.
Ask:Why is this depth preferable to a laser, staged peel programme or other resurfacing option?
Glycolic and lactic acids are alpha-hydroxy acids commonly associated with superficial exfoliation and texture or tone work. Salicylic acid is lipid-soluble and is frequently used where oiliness and acne are part of the picture. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) can be used at different strengths and techniques, from focal applications to broader resurfacing. Combination formulations also exist.
But concentration is not a simple measure of “strength.” The formulation, pH, number of layers, preparation of the skin, application technique and exposure time all affect what happens in the tissue. Two clinics advertising a “TCA peel” may therefore be proposing materially different treatments.
Compare the protocol, not the marketing name.
For darker or pigment-prone skin, conservative selection and pigment management become particularly important. An aggressive attempt to remove pigment can itself provoke post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, creating the opposite of the intended result.

Adjust skincare if instructed. Some plans use pre-treatment pigment control or require stopping irritating active ingredients.
Skin is cleansed and prepared; the peel is applied according to the chosen protocol and monitored for the intended endpoint.
Follow the aftercare precisely. Do not pick peeling skin. Use the recommended moisturisation and sun protection.
Judge results after recovery, not during the peeling phase. Decide whether maintenance, another session or a different modality is justified.
Thailand is attractive precisely because people want to be outdoors. That can conflict with peel aftercare. Recently treated skin may be more vulnerable to irritation and pigment change, so a plan that assumes you will immediately spend long days on the beach may be poorly matched to the trip.
Ask exactly when you can resume swimming, strenuous exercise, sauna or steam rooms, active skincare and prolonged outdoor activity. High-SPF broad-spectrum sunscreen, shade and physical protection are especially important when pigment is one of the reasons for treatment.
A superficial peel may make skin feel smoother and look fresher after the initial dryness or flaking settles, but established acne scarring, deep wrinkles and complex pigmentation are unlikely to be transformed by a light peel alone. More significant resurfacing may create more visible change, but it also brings more recovery and risk.
For acne, the plan may combine peels with medical acne control. For depressed scars, procedures such as subcision, microneedling, radiofrequency or laser may be more relevant. For melasma, aggressive resurfacing can be counterproductive, and long-term pigment management and sun protection matter as much as the procedure itself.
The best consultation may conclude that a peel is useful, that a gentler peel is safer, or that another treatment is better suited to the problem.

Not always. Visible shedding depends on the formulation and depth. A treatment can still create an effect without dramatic sheets of peeling, while deeper protocols can involve much more obvious recovery.
Peels can feature in some pigment-management plans, but melasma is complex and can recur or worsen with irritation and UV exposure. It needs careful assessment rather than an aggressive one-off approach.
