Pension shortfall calculator FAQs
What is a pension shortfall?
The difference between the retirement income or capital you need and what your current pensions, savings and contributions are projected to provide.
How is the capital required estimated?
The calculator discounts the inflation-adjusted annual income gap over the planned retirement period using the assumed net retirement return.
Does this replace the Retirement Income Calculator?
No. This tool isolates the funding gap and ways to close it. The Retirement Income Calculator provides the fuller year-by-year sustainability projection.
Should I use optimistic investment returns?
No. Test a cautious base case and at least one lower-return scenario. Higher returns are uncertain and usually involve higher risk.
Does the result include tax?
No. Tax depends on residence, nationality, account structures and changing rules. Personal tax advice may be required.
Can couples use the calculator?
Yes, by entering combined income, savings and target spending, while allowing for the longer-lived partner.
What if my pension starts after I retire?
This first version uses income expected at retirement. Use the Retirement Income Calculator where different income start ages need to be modelled precisely.
How often should I update the result?
At least annually and after material changes to income, savings, retirement age, lifestyle goals, currencies or investment assumptions.
A retirement shortfall is not a verdict. It is a planning target.
The earlier you identify it, the more options you usually have to close it.
