Vet costs in Thailand

What vet visits, vaccinations, sterilisation, tests, dental work, emergencies and parasite prevention cost in Bangkok and Phuket in 2026 — from published price reports — plus pet insurance and how to keep bills down.

฿300–฿600a rabies vaccination, as reported for Bangkok and Phuket
฿800–฿3,000reported emergency consultation fees at Bangkok 24-hour hospitals, before treatment

The essential answer

Routine care is affordable. Emergencies and surgery are where costs climb.

In 2026, a vet consultation in Bangkok or Phuket typically costs from about ฿350 to ฿600, a rabies vaccination ฿300–฿600, and sterilisation from about ฿1,200 at a basic Bangkok clinic to ฿8,000 for a large dog in Phuket. Monthly tick, flea and heartworm prevention — essential in Thailand's climate — adds a few hundred baht a month.

Bills rise quickly with emergencies, imaging, hospital stays and surgery: price reports put emergency surgery in Phuket at ฿15,000 to ฿80,000 or more. Vet prices in Thailand are not regulated, so the same procedure can cost very different amounts at a neighbourhood clinic, a private hospital and a university hospital. Always ask for a written estimate.

What drives the cost

Why the same treatment costs different amounts

  • Type of vet. Neighbourhood clinics usually charge least; large private hospitals more. Thailand Starter Kit describes Thonglor Pet Hospital as one of the pricier Bangkok options. University teaching hospitals are often cheaper for routine care, but waits can be longer.
  • Size of your pet. Anaesthetic, medicines and surgery are priced by weight: a large dog costs more to sterilise or treat than a cat.
  • Time of day. Night and emergency visits cost more than booked daytime appointments.
  • Location. Prices vary between areas and between clinics in the same area, so compare locally.
  • What the price includes. Check whether an operation price covers pre-surgery blood tests, anaesthetic, medicines, a cone and follow-up checks.

Thonglor Pet Hospital notes that the total depends on the consultation, tests, medication, procedures and level of care, and that an examination may be needed before an estimate can be given.

Yearly budget

What preventive care costs over a year

Prevention matters more in Thailand than in cooler countries: ticks, fleas and mosquitoes are active all year. This example adds up the Phuket Expat Guide's 2026 ranges for one small dog. Your vet may recommend a different routine.

For a large dog, the same source gives higher monthly prevention prices: heartworm ฿250–฿500 and flea and tick ฿300–฿600. For a cat, heartworm ฿150–฿280 and flea and tick ฿150–฿350 a month. Not included: food, grooming, boarding, sterilisation or treatment for illness.
Chapter 02

Big bills and how to plan for them

Emergencies, insurance and saving money

Emergencies

What an emergency visit costs

Night-time and emergency care costs more. An April 2026 guide to Bangkok's 24-hour hospitals reports emergency consultation fees at Thonglor Pet Hospital starting at about ฿800–฿1,500 depending on time and severity, and emergency visits at Chulalongkorn's Small Animal Teaching Hospital typically ฿1,000–฿3,000 before any procedures or medicines.

Treatment comes on top. For a serious case — surgery after an accident, a blockage or a bloated stomach — the Phuket Expat Guide reports emergency surgery costs of ฿15,000 to ฿80,000 or more, plus hospital stays. Ask whether a deposit or a signed estimate is needed before major treatment, so it does not delay care.

Pet insurance

Is pet insurance worth it in Thailand?

Pet insurance is sold by many Thai insurers. Comparison site CheckDi reports plans from about ฿599 a year, with most between ฿599 and ฿20,000 and an average of around ฿9,000, depending on cover, breed, age and claims history.

What it usually covers

Accident and illness treatment up to set limits, often with options for third-party liability, death and funeral costs, and finding a lost pet. Some plans add vaccinations or microchipping.

What it usually excludes

Pre-existing conditions, routine check-ups on basic plans, flea, tick and worm prevention, cosmetic procedures, breeding and behaviour treatment. Read the policy wording.

Before you buy

Illness cover often starts after a waiting period of about 60 days; accident cover usually starts at once. Ask whether your vet bills the insurer directly — Thonglor notes that insurance does not automatically mean direct billing.

Saving money

Seven ways to keep vet bills down

  1. Prevent rather than treat. Year-round tick, flea and heartworm prevention costs far less than treating tick fever or heartworm.
  2. Vaccinate on time. Missed boosters can mean restarting a course.
  3. Use a neighbourhood clinic for routine care, and a hospital for what needs one.
  4. Consider a university hospital for second opinions and specialist work.
  5. Ask for a written estimate and what it includes before any procedure.
  6. Ask about package prices: some hospitals publish vaccination and check-up packages.
  7. Insure young, before conditions become pre-existing.

The bottom line

Budget for prevention, plan for emergencies

For most healthy pets in Thailand, the predictable costs are modest: a yearly check-up and vaccinations, plus a few hundred baht a month for parasite prevention. The costs that hurt are the unexpected ones.

Setting aside an emergency fund, or insuring your pet while it is young, means a night at a 24-hour hospital is a worry about your pet — not about the bill.
