Koh Chang deserves more than a pin on the map.

Koh Chang is the Pattaya weekend that becomes a journey before you even reach the island. The road runs east across Rayong and Chanthaburi to Trat, then the car rolls onto the ferry and the mainland falls away. When the island’s steep green interior rises ahead, the trip finally feels earned.

Koh Chang is Thailand’s second-largest island after Phuket and much of its mountainous interior remains forested. That topography controls everything: development hugs the coast, roads climb and twist around headlands, and waterfalls drop from the high central spine toward the sea.

The west coast is the classic first visit. White Sand Beach is convenient and lively; Klong Prao is longer and more relaxed; Kai Bae combines beach life with viewpoints and access to smaller offshore islands; farther south the road becomes steeper and the atmosphere looser.

Klong Plu Waterfall is the easiest introduction to the forested interior. A short trail leads through humid greenery to the falls and pool. Go early, carry sensible footwear and treat the walk as part of the experience rather than racing in for a photograph.

The road south is one of Koh Chang’s attractions. Viewpoints reveal the archipelago, jungle presses close to the tarmac and each bay has a different personality. This is not a place to rush on a scooter: gradients and wet roads demand respect, particularly after rain.

Koh Chang is also the gateway to a wider marine world. Boat trips reach reefs and smaller islands around the archipelago, with snorkelling strongest when sea state and visibility cooperate. A good Saturday can move from waterfall to beach to boat without feeling contrived.

Food reflects both island tourism and Trat’s coastal roots. Expect grilled seafood, squid, prawns, crab, spicy salads and curries alongside a broad international restaurant scene on the west coast. Head farther from the busiest strips and the cooking becomes simpler and more local.

The quieter eastern side shows why Koh Chang should not be reduced to resort beaches. Fishing communities, mangroves and the Salak Phet area reveal a more settled island life, though they are better suited to a longer stay than a first two-night weekend.

Historically, the waters around Koh Chang also carry a wartime story: the 1941 Battle of Ko Chang between Thai and French naval forces took place in this region. It is a reminder that the archipelago has strategic as well as scenic significance.

The key to enjoying Koh Chang from Pattaya is time discipline on Friday and laziness once you arrive. Leave early, make the ferry without stress, then stop trying to conquer the island. Two nights are enough for a strong introduction; three are better if you can steal the extra day.
