The three-times-weekly service brings a new nonstop option between Heathrow and Phuket, with Thailand’s tourism authority reporting a 98% load factor on the inaugural arrival.

Virgin Atlantic’s inaugural nonstop flight from London Heathrow arrived in Phuket on Monday, 19 October, opening a three-times-weekly winter service to the island as Thailand prepares for its tourism high season.

The Boeing 787-9 arrived with a 98% passenger load factor, according to Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) figures reported by the Bangkok Post. The aircraft has 258 seats across Upper Class, Premium and Economy.

The route launched with its first departure from Heathrow on 18 October and is scheduled to operate until late March 2027. It is Virgin Atlantic’s first route to Thailand and, the airline says, the only nonstop service between Heathrow and Phuket.

A new Heathrow option for winter travel

The service gives passengers travelling between Heathrow and Phuket an alternative to connecting flights. Jirawadee Khunsap, TAT’s deputy governor for Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Africa, said it removed the need for passengers on this route to connect through the Middle East.

The Heathrow distinction is important: this is not the first nonstop connection between the UK and Phuket. TUI already serves the island from London Gatwick and Manchester, according to aviation publication AeroTime.

Virgin’s Boeing 787-9 configuration provides 31 Upper Class flatbed seats, 35 Premium seats and 192 Economy seats. Of the Economy seats, 36 are in the airline’s extra-legroom Economy Delight category.

The scheduled journey takes about 12 hours and 10 minutes from London to Phuket and 13 hours and 40 minutes in the opposite direction.

Strong first arrival as TAT targets UK visitors

The launch comes as advance bookings from the UK rose 17.5% ahead of the high season, the Bangkok Post reported. TAT forecasts 1.04 million UK visitors to Thailand in 2026, generating 71.6 billion baht.

Those are full-year forecasts, rather than results attributable to the new route. Similarly, the inaugural flight’s high occupancy provides an early indication of demand but does not establish how bookings will perform throughout the winter schedule.

TAT has worked with Virgin Atlantic to develop and support the service. Ahead of the launch, Worapa Angkhasirisap, director of TAT’s London office, said the flights supported the authority’s aims of attracting longer stays and spreading tourism benefits beyond established gateways.

Flight days and onward journeys

For travellers planning journeys in either direction, the published schedule has Heathrow departures on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with flights leaving Phuket on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Outbound flight VS214 is scheduled to leave Heathrow at 15:45 and arrive in Phuket at 09:55 the following morning, local time. Return flight VS215 is scheduled to depart Phuket at 11:45. Passengers should confirm timings with the airline when booking, as schedules can change during the season.

Virgin Atlantic has also arranged a partnership with Bangkok Airways for passengers continuing to other parts of Thailand. Its holiday programme includes options beyond Phuket, including Khao Lak, giving visitors another way to combine the new flight with a stay on the Andaman coast.

The confirmed operation remains seasonal, with three flights a week through late March. The supplied launch announcements do not establish a year-round service or additional frequencies.
