What will university actually cost your child?
Many expat families in Thailand plan to send their children to university in the UK, USA or Australia. These are consistently ranked among the best in the world -- but the true cost, tuition plus living expenses, is significant and rising every year.
United Kingdom
£27,000 – £55,000per year
Tuition + living costs, most 3-year degrees
United States
$32,000 – $60,000per year
Tuition + living costs, most 4-year degrees
Australia
AUD 45,000 – 85,000per year
Tuition + living costs, most 3-4 year degrees
Figures are approximate 2026 ranges based on published international student tuition and living-cost data. Actual costs vary by institution, course and city -- treat these as planning estimates, not quotes.
The earlier you start, the less it costs you
A university education 10-15 years from now will cost considerably more than these figures, not less. The single biggest lever available to parents isn't finding extra money later -- it's giving compound growth more time to work. Starting a structured education fund while a child is young, even with modest contributions, can cover a meaningfully larger share of the eventual bill than starting the same plan five or ten years later.
Plan ahead, and reduce the pressure later
Lawrence Young, Just Landed in Thailand's education fee planning partner at SVN Capital, helps expat families in Thailand build a realistic plan for future university costs -- and how it connects to your wider retirement and financial planning too.
